Lots of ram but still laggy

CPU/Ram: 768.00 MB
Product: Dell Computer Corporation

When I run Warcraft III Frozen Throne it lags when theres 30-40 units in the game. I've read the system requirements for Warcraft III and it only needed about 256 MB ram. I ended all unnessesary processes, scaned my computer for viruses and spyware, and I defragmented my hard drive. I have a NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 4000 and checked for updates so I doubt its the video card. I have the capacity of 55.8 GB and 39.2 GB of unused space. So why do I still lag?

First off, 768M of memory isn't necessarily a lot. System requirements are usually *minimum*, which means you should have more than that.

The reality is a fully patched XP machine with all the agents it needs to work properly and securely (anti-virus and software firewall), plus things that are running on start up but probably shouldn't be (which is the case with most machines) usually means even average users could benefit from having a gig of memory. Plus, you're playing a game!

What is also missing is what CPU you have. That could be a role.

That video card isn't very good, either, although I don't know if that's related to this issue.

768MB isn't a huge amount of RAM for gaming these days, regardless of what the minimal requirements state. The MX4000 certainly isn't a good gaming card either. It's basically a recycled Geforce2...it only supports up to DX7, uses 64-bit memory, plus it's a standard PCI card.

The thing is that before when my computer had only 384 MB ram it ran Warcraft III fine. After every month my computer started to lag more and more. So thats when I added a DDR 512 MB ram and took out the 128 MB in my computer because I only have 2 slots. I don't really feel any change but it has helped just a little bit. Did I do anything wrong? Do I need more ram? Oh and my processesor is intel pentium 4 and I think the speed is 1794 mhz. Please help im new.

If it ran fine before on lower-end specs, it sounds like you've got some nasty spyware and/or you need to defrag. Though you've said that already, that is commonly the problem.

My girlfriend has a 2.8 P4 w/ integrated graphics and we play WC3 over network all the time, and she has the same symptoms you describe. Low framerates from increased complexity in the scene is almost always related to your pixel-pushing power (aka your video card) or your CPU. Your video card is a marketer's wet dream, i.e. it says it's something it isn't and lots of people bought it not realizing it's a recycled piece of crap.

Upgrade the video card and give it a shot.

I agree, it's probably the video card. 768mb of ram may not be as good as one gig but it's definitly enough for warcraft 3.

Its either the video card or somthing else and another bad thing is that my motherboard doesn't support AGP video cards. Is there any way to bring my comp someplace and add like a AGP slot or somthing?

A Ti4600 beats the ever loving snot out of an MX4000. You're reinforcing the point of it being the graphics card.

Absolutely! Just tell them to replace the entire motherboard, no prob then. :-)

Sounds like it's time to retire that system. IE, massive upgrade it with a new motherboard, CPU, fan, *PCI-e* graphics card (no sense going AGP at this point on a new mobo). Otherwise, install something like this...

i have the same problem but my specs are pretty crappy but the thing is my frozen throne works much better on my 1.5ghz/128/geforce2 w/32mbs than on 700mhz/330/geforce 5400(or 5200?)
i understand the specs are low but shouldnt it work all right cause i have low options on everything and it stills lags when there are 30-40 units
(i just restored my comp and im on xp)
