I have an NVIDIA FX5200, im waiting on my new system to come through and am deciding whether to take my 5200 card out of the old system and put it in the new system. My old system is pretty ancient, an old athlon 1.3 and K7 motherboard. Despite its age i love this computer it runs Halo pretty well especially over the lan. It runs BF: Desert Combat flawlessy. This is what im finding hard to understand. I read in a pc magazine that the 5200 card is pretty tragic and they feel sorry for anyone that owns one. That said that it wont even be able to handle directx 9.0 games, even though it claims it can. Are they really that bad, surely if it runs Halo pretty well on my old system, a 2500XP with a A7V8X Deluxe motherboard and half a gig of corsair should make it crank?

The same thing is said about my video card, a GeForce 4 MX440, "total crap!" they all scream, yet here are some of the games I run in full detail with great frame-rates:

Unreal Tournament 2003
Battlefield 1942
Call of Duty
Max Payne 2
Far Cry (demo)
Vice City
Hidden & Dangerous 2 (well, not QUITE full detail!)

I often post about my card NOT being as crap as everyone says it is, but no-one believes me :-(

Why are you asking the question? you've seen the proof for yourself, you have a good card. 'nuff said.

Oh, you may want to know my system specs:

Athlon Xp 2000+ @ 2.09 GHz
Leadtek WinFast mobo
512 MB DDR 400

And yes, you will notice no end of improvement if you put it in your new machine, a totally new lease of life for it!

What you and I call "playable" are clearly two different things LeFtBehinD. Where you look for 40 FPS (totally unnecessary) I look for 20.

Keep it for now, and if you want a better card later, just buy a new one then.

lol...ladies calm down...

az82, upgrading your vga card would be increase performance, but if I were you I would wait for newer cards if the FX5200 is not too slow for you. Getting a new vga card when Direct X 10 is out is smart :) Make sure you get your card at Newegg.com!

the FX5200 is the best value for money in my opinion. I paid £40 (est $60) for mine about 5 months ago. Still producing decent frame rates.
I think it's worth keeping for another year. Of cos you can always put it on ur web server or something like that :P
