Is Pci-e necessary? I play the latest games, but i would like to build a new computer and use my PNY 6800. Maybe an AMD 3700+ 939skt. But my 6800 is agp. Is it worth upgrading my graphics card to PCI-E for the latest games or will my amd with 6800 agp work just fine?

Your video card will work just fine. PCI-E does offer greater bandwidth than AGP ports, but there has never been any real difference found in performance between a PCI-E card and its AGP twin. Some ppl will say that they can get some extra FPS if they overclock their PCI-E bus, but i've never seen it happen, having OC'd my own and noticing no changes in my marks. So your 6800 card will work just as well as the PCI-E version. However, I'm not sure if AGP cards have SLI or not, better wait for Jam's reply ;)

No, there is no AGP SLI.

REDneck87,
What's the specs to the system you're running the 6800 on? You have a decent card & that's better than 1/2 the battle when it comes to gamimg. If your system's respectable, there's no reason to do a complete rebuild just to get PCI-e
ASUS A7N8X-X
Athlon XP 1800+
8.5 x 200MHz
1024MB PC3200 2.5-3-3-7
Asus A9550GE/TD 128MB
WinME/WinXP Pro SP1

My specs are still the P4 2.4ghz, with 1 gb of PC 2700. I'm thinking since it wuold be so expensive to get a new motherboard along with an AMD processor and Ram, I should just upgrade my P4 to 3.4ghz or so, and switch my ram to PC3200. That would be the cheapest thing to do...

I don't think what you're proposing is a cost effective upgrade. The CPU alone would cost at least $275 & the RAM, another $80-100. Is $350+ worth it for a few more FPS?

What is your proposal then, switching to AMD would cost me even more because I would have to buy a new motherboard.

I think you should wait a while before upgrading. You have a decent computer with a kick ass video card. Wait a couple of months then consider upgrading. Since your computer can play any game out now on high detail I see no reason to spend money upgrading it.

I agree with HydraFury. I see no point in upgrading at this time...just sit back & enjoy what you have for the time being

I concure, Your system can most definitely handle any game thats out as of now, and with all the eye candy, but if you want to fed your 6800 with more info from your CPU, then consider this.
Here is my proposal:
As a plausible solution or just a reasonably cheap way to get more out of your system might be to just buy an overclocking friendly mobo, im pretty sure that your cpu can handle 3.0ghz, provided you have a good motherboard. I have an Abit IS7 board with intel's i865-PE chipset, Which is basically the i875p with intel's Photon Acceleration Technology disabled and to say the least very happy with my OC'ing results. So as far as socket 478 is concerned, the i865-PE and i875p chipsets is the end of the line for the 478, the former being slightly faster them the latter, due to PAT. So a good Asus, Abit, Chaintech, or Gigabyte mobo will allow you to acheive overall higher system preformance through overclocking which means more info will be fed to your 6800 resulting in smoother game play.CHIPSET---i865pe

Ahh, I do have an Abit motherboard, model AI7. I actually bought that one because I was told it was good for overclocking even though I have not overclocked. If you don't mind, please e-mail me and maybe explain/show me how to overclock my cpu. I know from other threads that my ram needs to be able to overclock as well to match the cpu...I would love a little better gameplay without having to spend money!!!

E-mail will arrive shortly.
