bandwidth Gets Bigger
Transfer rate(mbps) ----->faster
PCI express x16---------------->4000
AGP 8X -------->2128
PCI express x8 ------->2000
AGP 4X ---->1064
PCI express x2 -->500
AGP 1X ->266
PCI express x1 ->250
PCI ->133

A PCI express slot is designated by the number of lanes it supports:1x slot supports a single lane, an X2 slot supports 2 lanes, and so on. an x16 slot can handle 4 GBps of bandwidth of an AGP 8X. but dont throw your PCI card out yet. the lastest comp and motherboards come equipped with a single x1 slot, a single x16 slot for the graphic card, and some original PCI slots.

unless you are on a tight budget or you just bought a high-end AGP video card for your current system, a PC equipped with PCI express is a sound buy. well, if you are not in hurry, however, wait for a while. PCI express cards are scarce and untested, as is software that can take advantage of the newly available bandwidth.

You might wanna wait. But if you can't wait and you're pretty serioud about PCIe you can always shell out some serious cash for the best in PCI-Express, you can check out Alienware or VoodooPC's nVidia SLi systems.

The only reason Im waiting for PCI X is so i can inverst in an mobo that supports SLI techology. If your gonna have it, 2 pci x video cards are better than 1 right ? LOL

I think i'll wait for at least a few years - my AGP powered PC is plenty powerful for the foreseeable future.

Also the expense - geez: at gamepc.com you can equip your custom PC with an ATI Radeon X800 XT PCI for 688 dollars. That's just insane to me. That costs more than a low-end basic use workstation.
