Ok so i recently bought a PCI-E card. A GeForce6800GS upgrading from a Geforce FX 5500. Ok so I put the card into comp and then had this the other card in it so that i could see something. Now i installed the drivers neccessary for the pci-e card so then i shut off and plug my monitor adapter into the pci-e one. So then it shows the boot up and then after it just starts to flicker like crazy and it just wont stop. What the hell am i doing wrong.

Specs
AMD Athlon Sempron 2800+
GeForce 6800GS(NOW) GeForceFX5500 (BEFORE)
MSI K8N Neo3 Motherboard
please help i dont want all this money to go to waste.

from what I understood, you're doing everything wrong. There's no need (and it won't work) to install the drivers before you actually plug the monitor into the card. What you have to do is, first, uninstall every videocard driver from CONTROL PANEL - ADD AND REMOVE PROGRAMS. After that, remove your old PCI card and plug the pci-express card and plug the monitor on it. Start your comp and everything will be fine except your video at low resolution. Then just install the 6800gs drivers and reboot.
Done!

It would really help if you provided better information. At what point were you getting the "blinks"?

With the 5500 installed were you able to remove all the drivers (yes/no)?

After you shut down and replaced it with the 6800 were you able to boot up (would be in 800x600) with no problem (yes/no)?

Were you able to install the drivers for the 6800 (yes/no)?

To me it sounds like it could be a refresh rate problem. Are you using a CRT or flat panel? With the 5500 installed beforehand, reduce the refresh rate to 60mhz. After installing the 6800 you can experiment with higher refresh rates.

hmmph...
strange...
Try this, use your 5500 again and enter your bios. I don't exactly remeber where exactly but there is a place where you can change your "initial display device" Perhaps it is put to pci, so you have to change it to pci-express. Then the mobo should try the pci-express card as an initial display instead of seeking for a pci card.

But first of all, I don't know anything about your mobo, but you are sure it has a pci express slot right?
And also I don't know about the 6800gs but my x1800xl pci-express card requires a 6-pin direct connection to the power supply, plus a 4-pin extra connection on the mobo to aid the pci-express slot.
Make sure everything is correctly pluged in.

Did you forget to plug in the 4-pin plug from your power supply to your graphic card? Old FX5500 doesn't need that while the geforce 6800 series does...

Ok i checked the wires and the thing i see for me to connect is a 6 pin cable...no 4 pin...If so then i wouldnt know where to put it. I didnt know pci-e installation was such a pain. AGP and PCI are so easy. Still require help. If i do require a 4 pin i think i have one that came with my psu box.

Your motherboard: http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1806
"the videocard you wish to use must be pre-approved by MSI otherwise it will not function in the motherboard."
This is an old article but it might help you to read it.

well if your psu is kinda new it should have a a 4 pin connector. it should say in the box (20+4 pin conector) If it has, you have to find it and plug it on a white little box with four holes... (in the picture of your mobo http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1806
it is on the UPPER RIGHT corner) That 4-pin connector is made to directly feed the pci-express slot. If your board does not have it, but it has the 6-pin pci express conector, then you have to buy a 20to24 pin adapter (like a buck)

However you should aslo check the compatibility list...

No. This article is from PCStats. They performed testing on your motherboard and wrote a review.
Here is the compatibility list from MSI
http://www.msi.com.tw/html/products/mainboard/agr/7135agr.pdf
I don't see your GPU on the list. That does not mean its not compatible but you may want to contact MSI if you can't get it working.

As Fennerman said: You have to get into Bios and disable AGP and enable PCI or PCI-E. Select them as your "initial display device".You also have to take care of the power requirements. It will not boot with both cards in it. The drivers are both nvidia. WinPX will recognise the new card if it done correctly.

Try reseting your CMOS. Hopefully you didn't fry your MB when you booted with both cards installed.

Is your PSU 350W or more? At least 16A (preferrably more) on the +12v rail? You're 100% certain that the card is connected to the PSU?

Hellz Yea!

On the front of your 6800GS card, at the back edge, there is a black,4 pin power connector that takes a 4 pin power dongle from your power supply. Not the 4 pin White square one refered to earlier. This supplies extra power to the 6800GS card. It needs to be pluged in for the card to work.

Right i plugged in the one from the video card to the psu. It is 2 cables that has 3 pins. So i connect em both and have on seperate cables. Also wondering can they share with others, like hard drive or cd drive? My psu is 500w and I have 17A on the 12v so i dont think my psu is a problem. Maybe its the monitor? im gonna try a different one rite now and i still have to try out the adapter. Ill get back to you guys once i see if it works.
