Brand new Dell Dimension 3000, plenty of memory etc. Arrived 3 days ago.

First the install failed on loading Disk 2. So I set every previously installed exe to compatibility mode for Windows 95 and made it to disk 4. Then froze at 77%. Can not reinstall, but have cleaned drive and registry. What am I missing?

Tried manually unzipping the files, and running the game, but then it asks me to insert the correct CD and restart the application.

Check your system log for errors on the CD drive that say "bad block". If you have those, and all other of your disks read ok, your Sims CD's are bad.

To get to your logs - Right click on My Computer, select Manage, expand Event Viewer, and click System.

P.S. 256M is not "plenty" of memory. If you want to play Sims 2, upgrade to at least 512M, but the way RAM is priced now, might as well go for a gig.

Agreed...256MB is not plenty of memory...far from it. And if you're running onboard graphics, you'll find SIMS 2 will be unplayable. You'll need to upgrade to a "real" video card as well

I stand corrected. Should have had enough memory to install. I will look into more memory to play.

Anyway, although no CD drive errors in event log, Entropy Rules!

Finally made new directory called Sims 2 take 2 and installed there successfully beginning to end. Go figure.

No video issues yet, that will be for my son to determine, seems to launch okay.

Thanks for giving me the will to go on. After 2 days cooling my temper, your postings made me try once again. My son got this game last year and will be thrilled that it finally runs!
