What is your budget?
What games do you want to play?
How good of speed and image quality are you looking for?
Any special requirements? Ultra quiet? Neon lights and other modding? Overclocking? etc.

I'm American, so I can't really tell you what you can afford since I don't know what £500 is.
As far as cases go, you have two basic choices.
A. Buy a case with a crappy power supply or none at all, and get an aftermarket power supply that's good.
B. Get a case with a good PSU already in it.
If B, check out Antec cases. I particularly like the Sonata II, which is a quiet, well ventilated case with a 450W ATX2.0 power supply. Looks good with a piano black finish to it. Has front USB, sound, firewire as well.
If A, look for an ATX case that has enough 5.25" and 3.5" bays for your current and future needs, although most cases should suffice. Make sure it has enough case fan spots for adequate cooling, with a minimum one front and one back spot. ATX refers to the form factor of the motherboard. Most motherboards are ATX.
Again, if this all confuses you, I would suggest the Antec case above. It will work with just about any motherboard and other components.
For an aftermarket power supply, Antec, Thermaltake, Enermax, Coolermaster, Vantec, PC Power and Cooling all make good power supplies. (I'm sure I'm forgetting some off the top of my head.) DO NOT SKIMP! Get at least a 400W PSU from a reputable manufacturer.
As for your processor, look for the Athlon 64 Venice or San Diego core CPU's. In the Venice, check out the 3000 and 3200. Both overclock like mad. The 3500 for the money is a waste. The 3700 is a San Diego with double the cache as a Venice, and priced well.
DFI is a good choice for motherboards, make sure you get something with the NForce4 Ultra or SLI chipset.

yes thanxs but my budget in american money wud probly be $650 to $700 ok so is the nforce4 ultra a cheap chip or not plus could i take the power supply out of my old computer and put it in my new 1 plus other parts from my old pc email back thanxs

i have been looking at this motherboard i just wanna now if its good or not to work with an amd athlon 64 it (a kv2 extreme athlon 64 motherboard) its from maplins its cost is £50 about $80-$90 in american money so what u think email back plz thanxs

Not a reliable brand, and that's not the best chipset.
In the states, Nforce4 Ultra boards can be had for $100, even from reputable brands.

hi most of the motherboards i looked at only support up to 1ghz processor speed i need at least 2.0ghz thanxs emal back :)

Any Nforce4 Ultra chipset motherboard (socket 939) should support any Socket 939 CPU.

i don't know if you've started to buy anything yet... but if you haven't, let me make a suggestion to you..
your biggest mistake is the "i don;t buy anything online" statement..
and my question to you is...WHY? if you buy your components in a store, you will be throwing your money away, you will surely play at least double the price you can get it for online. If you were to buy everything you need for a halfway decent gaming rig from a store, look at paying about:
$150-case
$250-processor
$200-motherboard
$150-minimun 1GB dual channel DDR RAM
$200-minimun 256MB AGP 8X video card (prefer PCI-E)
$150-minimum SATA150 (prefer SATA300)
$100-decent PSU
$50-CDROM drivethats already over $1,100 (american) to build a semi-decent gaming rig (and that is a strippe down version.... no bells and whistles)
my advice to you and anybody who wants to build, buy everything online unless you know some magical place that sells this stuff cheap. if you purchase the above mentioned things online, you could build it for about $700 american dollars
