Extra video memory does not necessarily mean extra performance, please bare that in mind.

Also, it may not make sense to spend a lot of money on a gfx card if the rest of your system can't keep up with the more powerful ones out there.

What are your system specs? CPU, motherboard if you happen to know it, do you have an AGP slot, PCI-e, or only have PCI slots?

Highly unlikely. Check your manual. If you do have PCI-E, is it a 16x or what?

What's your processor speed?

you should need a processor upgrade and a motherboard upgrade too, at least if your current motherboard supports a higher processor. I would recomend PVI 2.6 or celeron D 2.66, is cheaper and is a very good option.

You won't have a PCI-E slot on that board, that's for sure. If you can spare the money, grab a nice MSI K8N Neo-4 Socket 939 board ($100), anything higher than a 3000+ S939 athlon 64 and either an X700 256 MB or GeForce 6600GT 128MB (I like the 6600 GT more, esp. since it's way better for only about 10 bucks more). However, if you can't spare the money, try and either grab a 9700 pro or 256MB 9600 XT. Sure, extra memory doesn't mean extra speed, but newer games have high-res textures that suck up memory, and 9600 XTs can still run most games today with full ability (does 9600 run shader model 3.0? I forget). Stay away from GeForce cards unless you're in the mid-high range market, bcuz ATi smokes the crap out of GeForce cards at the price point you're looking at. So, yes, I highly recommend the 9600XT or 9700 Pro (esp for Half-Life 2) but keep in mind your hardware is aging.

NO!

Your approaching this ugrade all wrong. The fact of the matter is, you have a premanufactured computer, which means your powersupply will not be able to handle anything above a low-end video card, FACE IT!! Dont deny it! Besides, with your out of date system hardware your machine will not even benefit from a mid to high-end graphics card, thats the reality of your situation all your components will bottleneck the hell out your 'upgrade'. How do you ever expect to install a new video card anyway, if you are not even aware of what slot is in your computer? "You think you have an AGP" those are your words! We are only tring to help you! So dont get your panties in a bunch. We are tring to stop you from making a BIG MISTAKE from buying a $300.00 card thats incompatible with your current setup. With that said, nobody here can even began to suggest a video card for you, if we dont know what graphics port is available to you. So I recommend that you pop the side panel off your case and have a gander to see, this will be your first step if you intend to play Half-Life, Doom3, ect, ect....

Hey, don't be so hard on the guy, he asked an honest question. :) I'd agree your current system needs upgrading. A 1.8 with 512 RAM is pretty sparse for running today's games. Your MB probably only has a 4x AGP and since most video cards today are 8x, even with a 4x/8x backwards compatible card, the 4x AGP and the rest of your system will be a bottle neck.

Solidsnake,

Your not going to be able to see what type of graphics port you have by physicly looking at your motherboard. you got a old ish computer so it deffinatly WONT have a PCI-express port. It probably will have a AGP port. depending how old your comp is tells us the speed of the port wether it be a 2x 4x or 8x agp.

to stop all this arguing why dont you download
sandra by sis soft.

http://www.sisoftware.net/

this will show the FULL specs of you system and more importantly the type of AGP (accellerated graphics port) you have. It will say either
AGP x2, x4, x8
This then shows the speed of the port and you can then look for a card that matches.

If its a x8 i would say get a 6600gt there way good enough for current games and are reasonable in price. But the rest of your comp is still gonna cause a problem as its older than the card and therefore gonna slow its performance down. PS ya still gonna need enough power to run it 400 watt minimum.

hope this helps a bit

The 6600GT will be bottlenecked by his system. If he goes with a "lesser" card like the Radeon 9600XT 128MB, he'll still be able to play most games (though not on high settings), it will cost less than $100, & he probably won't have to upgrade his power supply

Jam's right. Go for either a 9600XT or a 9700 Pro if you really don't want to upg your rig. However, if you really want to see your graphics sing, you will need a system upgrade. You most likely won't be able to run the games you suggested on your comp even with a new video card, so if you want to actually enjoy playing new games like Doom 3 or Far Cry, you'll (sorry to say this!) need a new system.

I have a 3.2GHZ P4 with Hyper Threading, 1 GB DDR 400 Mhz Ram, a ATI RADEON Shappire with 256 MB...and Doom3 only gives me a 30 fps Framerate in Medium Quality at a resolution of 800x60.

I saw tests in the WEB that affirm that you can play at 1024x768 in HIGH quality with a P4 1.8 GHZ, 512 DDR RAM and a 128 MB GForce Graphic Card at a framerate of 60 FPS.

My system is slightly the DOUBLE than that 1.8 GHZ System. What´s going on then?
