You need to go into the BIOS (setup) and disable this card.

First, uninstall your new card.
(you may have to go into:

Start>Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager....

and right click on your adapter to remove it. Now, reboot. When you reboot your computer, hit either {DEL}, {F1], or [F2}, depending on your computer.

Then you go into the menu that has your onboard video/audio/USB settings. (the built in accesories on your motherboard)
On my board, this is under "INTEGRATED PERIPHERALS".
Change the Videon onboard to [disabled].
Then when you go back into Windows, you can reinstall your new card.

Let me know if this works!

I forgot to mention, name brand computers (Dell, Compag, Gateway) are known to have problems when attempting to upgrade them.
This could be one of those instances.

My take is that your Compaq motherboard may not be compatible with your PCI card.

Have you checked the motherboard for jumpers that are needed to fully disable the onboard graphics? That could be the problem. If you have no jumper for that purpose, everything should be done in the BIOS.

If it is disabled in the BIOS but your system keeps reinstalling, it could be a motherboard compatibility problem...

Do you have the most recent BIOS update?

When you boot up your computer, in the lower left hand corner at the bottom, is a string of numbers. Take these numbers and post them here.

If all fails, you may need to contact Compaq and communicate your problem with them...you could have a faulty board.

Have you had any problems prior to installing your new card? Also, if you are disabling the onboard card in BIOS, it should NOT be recognized and reinstalled, by Windows.

Let me know what you find.

Ok I when on Bios and I disable the onboard Prosavage of 8mb [DISABLE] but she keeps installing it and now when I turn on the computer with the ATI Radeon on the PCI slots she doesn't want to run, the monitor when off. b4 she didn't did that I guess is doing it becuase I install the driver from the ATI card but not in auto-run CD cuz in auto-run she doesn't install it when you try it said; {unable to install drivers bla bla bla } so I when on Add/hardware and the Card ATI Radeon is on the list of graphic cards. So I put the CD and she install the drivers. but when I hit shut down she won't load with the ATI Card plugged on the PCI slot. so I got to take it off and let her load with the Prosavage (old graphic card). And how do I update the Bios? as I know I haven't do that. About the numbers that you toll me that appears on the left corner I never see numbers in ther she just show the Screen compaq then WIndows Me screen the the Desktop screen thats all.

Thanks

If it is not loading with the new card although
in BIOS it is unable, there must be a problem with the motherboard.

Have you tried installing the graphics card in a different system to see if it works?

You may want to contact Compag and see if there are any jumpers on your motherboard that need to be disabled in order to fully disable it (this may explain why it keeps installing when disabled)

I can't understand why a system would keep installing a BIOS disabled card unless the motherboard is faulty, or the BIOS in corrupted.

Try contacting Compaq and see if they have heard of similar problems.

FYI - in the event that you ever want to purchase a new computer, go with a custom build if possible...upgrading and troubleshooting will be alot easier.

Let me know what happens!
