Comment:

I have a Pentium 4 2.4ghz, 1 gig of pc 2700 ram, and an ABIT Guru AI7 motherboard...This is a little different from the other video card questions because I already have a few picked out, but I still want your opinion.

9800pro 256mb
9800xt
6600gt
6800 vanilla

Are any of these overkill for my system? Even so, if the 6800 vanilla is overkill, will I still get the best performace with it since it is the better card? I have been reading and many people say that most people bottleneck there video cards because the video card technology is advancing to quickly.... Your opinion on which card. Oh I also have a 400W ps. I will upgrade that if necessary.

I'd go for the 6600gt or 6800, both perform better than the 9800's in most games and should be fine with a 400w PSU.

They're all pretty similar in price, the cards you've listed, so I'd go for the 6800 or 6600gt.

They will bottleneck slightly, obviously both cards would run better with a better Processor (i.e. AMD 64 3500+), but I don't think it will be overkill.

I don't understand why he'd want a 6800 on a p4 2.4GHz when a 2.8GHz P4 bottlenecks at about a 9800 Pro video card, and he doesn't even have that much horsepower. Save your money and go either 6600GT or 9800 Pro unless you're planning on upgrading your motherboard, CPU, and fan really soon. And if that's the case, you should get it in one shot and go PCI-e.
