old pc,
P4 HT 3.06GHZ,
1GB DDr400 Corsair ram,
ABIT AS-8 mobo,
Nvidia 6800OC 128MB,
maxtor 160GB 7200RPM IDE HD, and 600W PSU.

just after 2 years, this pc couldnt handle new games in even medium quality, like HL2-Ep2, company of hero, Test Drive Unlimited, and World of Conflict, and so on. i had to play new games with low quality and forced to use 960x600 resolution on my 19"W monitor, still laggy even with that setting.

now i got a new PC.
intel Core 2 DUO E6550
2.33GHZ, 1333MHZ FSB, and 4mb cache
OCZ Platinum 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop
GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX All Solid Capacitor Intel Motherboard
Nvidia 8800GT 512MB

how long will this machine last? i am still using the old HD, which is maxtor 160GB 7200RPM IDE HD. du think i should upgrade to SATA?

The fact that the ABIT AS-8 is an AGP motherboard did you in. However, the P4 would have sooner than later. If you had a PCI-E motherboard, you would have been able to extend the gaming relevancy of the machine a tad longer. Sadly, your new machine won't be a fast gaming machine -- if you are into newer titles -- for more than a few years either, but you won't have to get a new machine the very next time, a new video card should get you caught up & hold you over.

Its already out of date..
My pc is the following and I need an upgrade too, but it will cost me around $600:

Mobo: Asus M2N SLI Deluxe AM2 nforce 570 sli
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 5600+ 2.81 ghz dual core
RAM: 2x 1GB G Skill ddr2 800
Video Card: Zotac8800gt 700mhz gpu, 2ghz ram

---------------------
My new mobo would be the following:

Mobo:
ASUS M3N-HT DELUXE/MEMPIPE AM2+/AM2 NVIDIA nForce 780a SLI HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail
3-way SLI with Revolutionary Memory Heat Pipe

$240

CPU:
AMD Phenom 9850 BLACK EDITION 2.5GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 2MB L3 Cache Socket AM2+ 125W Quad-Core Processor

$235

RAM:
G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory

$130

--------

And these are just the base parts!
I need 2 more of the 8800gt 1gb editions
A new HDD
And whatever else I fancy (like a blu ray disk or an had cable tuner)

I keep trying to switch to intel, but in a fight between an AMD quad core 2.5ghz overclockable to at least 3ghz for $240 vs an Intel quad core 2.5ghz overclockable to at least 3ghz for $280, ill take the AMD.

besides, you cant go 3 way sli with intel.

Yes do go the way of SATA II please do. It sped up my boot time by a whole minute, and thats a lot!
