how can i make old chess '98 progs work on 7

Specs: Windows 7, 2.7 GHz / 2814 MB
I have two old chess programmes, Chessmaster and Fritz, that work ok on windows '98, but refuse to work on windows 7, to replace them would cost me about £90, which is crazy, how can I get around this.

Are they Windows or DOS-based versions. If DOS-based, you could try something like DOSBox:
