Homeworld loads fine, but as soon as the actual game begins, it freezes up the entire system within the first minute of gameplay. I run WinXP and have a VIA/S3G KM400/KN400 videocard.

Some people will tell you to try Compatability Mode.
(I tried it and Homeworld still freezes)
Try this:
Start, Control Panel, Sounds Speech and Audio Devices, Sounds and Audio Devices, at the bottom click "Advanced" (for Speaker Settings), click "Performance" tab.
Set hardware acceleration one notch lower, and run Homeworld again. If it freezes, go back to the setting, and lower it another notch. Keep doing this until Homeworld works properly (one notch at a time).
You can't lower it all the way because the game complains that there is no <nobr><a class="iAs" style="border-bottom:darkgreen 1px solid;text-decoration:underline;color:darkgreen;background-color:transparent;" href="http://itxt.vibrantmedia.com/al.asp?ipid=7&cc=us&cf=1&ai=17558351&di=23145&ts=20040131112227&redir=http://www60.overture.com/d/sr/?xargs=02u3hs9yoaUFVvOzDC%2FhAsK4x47O7F2IWDTgJTECoZRHUdjrSkAnGNiX%2FaY19VKt09p3B8e%2FiPmf%2BDM%2FKdR8rX9F7CNvyZrHymxU0qZw%2FewK%2BrAVA%2FzUAoa7N1xgfqkcnf71sFO5o5aEp2zpEo6QxlAAJdyG4ovIUmkNy8cNUy7k5Ym04zTeMzWdW7xTKR0XjlCFJZRYLIuQFGKzSzRAQpSicnhzObsb3Vk2%2Fg2tc785sfl3HOpHku6w4meyFrslZq4tULhfvQErJ7T5swJMY2kMakBCbWIHgplvqsWYQeAH7uN1Ra" target="_blank" oncontextmenu="return false;" onmouseover="kwE(event,23145);" onmouseout="kwL(event);" onmousemove="kwM(23145);">sound card</nobr> available when you try to run it at this setting.
There might be a easier way to that dialog box, but I can't think of one right now.

If I 'm not mistaken that is an integrated video chipset on your motherboard, Home world and homeworld 2 do not like integrated video. If you can borrow an decent video card install it and then try homeworld I think you will find she will work fine.
