ALright, just finished HL2 last night. Brilliant game, crap ending,,GRRRR. Anyway, I decided to have a go at CS:source. I never played the original so i knew i would get my ass kicked. But i had fun for about a half hour(even shot a few people, in between getting killed) till the screen froze up and i noticed the lights on my cable modem were flashing(usually just on). Does this mean I got booted from the server or something? Also what does the latency mean? Should I look for a high or low number? Can anyone reccomend a decent server for relatively new guys to join in on or should i just continue to pick random ones? THX.
Dave.

So long, and thanks for all the fish!

dont know bout ur problem, correct me if im wrong, but latency the time in miliseconds it takes for you to get an update from the server. basically, there is a 23 milisecond delay between what u see and whats really there. the game runs smoothly with a low ping, b/c ur screen gets updated more often. so definitely a low ping is much better.
filter ou all the empty, full, and pword protected servers, sort by ping, and start at the lowest and make ur way up, finding servers w/ a good map/number of people/etc. that you like. if u find a server u like w/ a good map cycle, nice people, no haxors, etc, then add to ur favorites and maybe play it a little more. you could even join a clan if u want.

Thx Bobby,
So latency = ping if i'm understanding you correctly, and lower number is better. How do i know which maps etc are good? Whats a Haxor?
Sorry for dumb questions but I really am brand new to this. I don't know anything about online gaming as i've never done it before(never had high speed before).

'haxors' are people who use hacks, or cheat. maps which are popular include de_dust, de_aztec, fy_iceworld, etc. most people who are new to the game start off playing de_dust. yes, latency = ping. so lower the number the better. if it's under 70 is great. 70+ you'll really start to notice the lag.

haxors are cheaters. most of the time they are noticable. different cheats to look out for are:
1. aimbot: allows the user to very easily get a headshot. if u see someone like jumping and spinning around, firing one shot and getting a headshot while in the air, then they might have this. if their headshots are unbelievable, then maybe they have this. be warned though, headshots are common and just because someone is getting lots of headshots doesn't mean they are hacking at all.

2. wall hack: basically, the person sees no walls, so they know exactly where everyone is. usually they magically shoot you perfectly through the wall without even coming out like a normal person would to see if anyone was there. again, just because u get shot through a wall doesn't mean they're hacking. most people will shoot through boxes or walls if they saw you go behind them or if they want to make sure no one is camping there.

3. speedhack: definitly the easiest to spot. if u see a guy going around the map at 200 mph, usually knifing everyone, then they are speedhacking

4. theres this one where the person is spinning around in circles at fast speeds, takes one shot and its a headshot. obvious here.

5. if u see someone's name changing every couple seconds like automatically, they are hacking.

watch out for these.
btw, most people play the original maps, not the custom made ones. these are, among others: cs_aztec, de_dust, de_dust2, de_prodigy, cs_militia, de_inferno, cs_italy, de_cbble. i cant remember the other ones. cs_ maps are hostage rescue maps. de_ maps are bomb defusal. as_ maps are vip escape maps. fy_ are shoot-em-up maps.
yes, the lower the ping the better.

Here's a site where begginers get a good start.

1. Bot's United

Here, you can download Bots, which you can use for practice. The greatest thing about bots is that you can play CS even if you are offline.

The latest news I've ever heard there is the release of the Official "CS-Source Bot."

If you don't want to install/download their Bots, then they have servers that have Bots which you can play with (beware, you might accuse bots of cheating because they are damn good, that is for begginers, me I kick their a** all the time). See for yourself, and don't forget to read instructions.

2. CS-Nation

Here you can find replacements for weapons. What I mean is you can download different varieties of high quality weapons here. See for yourself, and also don't forget to read instructions.

another tip is to use the shortcut keys to the buy menu.
eg, hit B, 8, 2, and this gives u kelvar and helmet. (always do this 1st) jus means u dont waste valuable time at the start of the round. eventually ull b able 2 buy 2 weapons, armor, grenades and other stuff even before the round starts.
also about servers, jus find a handful of good ones, preferably ones with good admins, so they can kick hackers straight away. download map packs too. saves time when u actually wanna play a different map.

btw u should play day of defeat! i do, n it kicks serious butt!

Thx for the advice folks. Had my first serious attempt for about 2 hrs last night, starting to understand a little bit whats going on but some of these guys are too damn good. I managed about a 1:2.5 kill:death ratio. Is that ok for a NOOB, or should i just quit now? Think i'll try that kevlar helmet thing and see if i can last a bit longer.

Also My ping was about 65 but one guy had a ping of 1! Is that for real or what?

your ping depends on different things. 65 is either good or bad, depending where the server is located. im guessing the server u were playing on wasnt really close to you, but again wasn't far away. that other guy didnt have a steady 1 did he? it could happen. i usually get anywhere between 10-30 depending on where the server is and the speed of the server. i live in norhtern new jersey and usually play either ny or washington dc servers or somewhere like that.

Yeah he had a steady ping of 1 from what i could see. How do you know if a server is near you? I am in Oregon but i just picked a server that had a reasonably low number and decent amount of players.

Main menu > Find servers.
Then use the location' dropdown menu to filter the continents i.e. Europe/ Asia/ North America.

There isnt a direct way of knowing precisely where the server is in CSS.
However some servers will have '.co.uk' or '.com' web add's on suggesting they're from a country.

Its common sense, not brain surgery.
