I just installed Half Life 2, and when I click to run it i get this message:
Runtime Error!
Program: C:\Program Files\Half Life 2\root\hl2.exe
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information.
I run a AMD Athlon 64 3000+, 512mb RAM, 160GB SATA HDD, ATI AIW 9800SE with updated drivers and DirectX 9.0c.

Try the HL2 forum - but only do this if you have a legally sourced copy of the game.

Turns out it was an illegal copy, however I have bought the game, and I was wondering if I can fix this error or should I just get rid of the illegal copy and use the legal one?

Did you completely uninstall Half-Life 2 and delete all the files and THEN reinstall with the legal one?
