Subject: High Ping on CS
OS: XP
CPU/Ram: P4; 256 mb
Comment:

Hi. I used to play Counter Strike with a ping around or below 50. I have an Optimum Online Cable Modem and a new 2.66 Ghz computer w/ 256 mb ram. However, i stopped playing for a while. While i wasn't playing, i got a dlink di 514 router. However, this machine is still directly connected to the modem. Now, when i play CS, my ping is around 250-350. Can anyone help me out? I disabled my Norton Auto Protect and have no firewall, including the win xp firewall, running. However, the di 514 router has a built in firewall. Could this be the problem? How do i fix this? Please give me detailed intstructions. Thanks!

Cable speeds vary throughout the day but you are correct in assuming that the router "can" be a source of your problem. But I'm not saying that it is! Try connecting directly to the cable modem instead of the router to see if it helps...
If it stays the same, you may just have more competition in your area to the cable itself. More people signing on at all hours than there were (was) before???

If you're having ping troubles, check if your Internet settings on Steam are at the right amount. Since one of the updates some(i think it was a HL2 questionnaire) of the Internet settings to nearly half the people (you could have been one of them)

Also type: rate 9000 <--- into the CS console. That will get you're ping down and choke rate if its configured wrongly,

GeForce FX5200 128Mb
AMD Barton 2800 @ 2.3Ghz
Asus A7N8X E-Deluxe
AERO 7 LITE CPU fan

type "net_graph 3" to see your fps, which lets you see your fps(frames per second).
also "rate 9999"
make your unpate rate "cl_updaterate 70"
you can also type "cl_cmdrate 40"
make sure you type in those exact numbers

another thing to type is "developer 1" it helps with fps, if your fps are low, your not going to run good. that shoud fix it.
