I have a problem with a new hardware firewall/router; Thomson Speedtouch 580. When internet gaming; the latency is through the roof 1000+, particulalry with counter strike. Earlier today with my previous modem and a software firewall the latency was <50- is this due to packet filtering? Are there any settings I could tweaK. I mean the computers only good for working on now ;-)

I have never used that router before but most things like this are universial. Your latency might not be 1000+. The game sends a ping to your computer. The word ping comes from the navy, when your sonar makes a sound that sounds like "PING". The word ping now refers to sending out a signal and waiting to see how long it takes for the signal to come back to the sender.
In your case, I believe your firewall is blocking out the ping from pinging your computer and comming back.
You should be able to change these firewall settings. Since it is a new one, I assume you still have the box or some instruction manual. You must connect to the router by typing an IP-adress into your browser. That IP should be someplace in your router documentation. It should be something like 192.168.?.?. Replace those ? with either a 1 or a 0. IP adress varies between Router brands. then you will need the defult password, which also should be in your documentation. once your logged in you should be able to change any settings you need to change
