HALO-What are assists?

I bought HALO pc and my question is, what are assist? I was geussing it was when you assist in a kill, or to capture the flag, but I was told I was wrong. So what is it guys?

might be assisting a team mate from dying? i don`t really know either. i just try and help out a team mate whenever and hope i win each battle :)

I think assists means you help another teammate with a kill, atleast thats my interpretation of what an assist is.
In basketball, you get an assist for helping your team score(usually passing gets an assist), i.e. you and another player are responsible for scoring, both players get credit for the score. You'd think halo uses the same concept for the meaning of an assist, i.e. contributing to a kill is like helping your team score a layup or 3-pointer.

The player resposible for the score "kill" gets the assist, i.e. the playmaker.

In Halo, an assist is when you do the most damage that results in a player getting killed, but do not make the shot that actually kills him.
Say I beat you down with the pistol, but then some jerk gets a shot in that kills you. He gets a kill and I get an assist (also known as 'sloppy seconds')...
