I have an ATI Radeon X600 Pro/256Mb/PCIEx 16x and I have directx 9.0c installed. I also have the latest driver for my video card.
However, I can't start up HALO combat evolved. It tells me it can't initialize direct3D. I've run DXDIAG and everything's ok, all tests run fine. Still...
Any advice? Thanks!

Dude

I'm not exactly sure, but I have had compatability problems with Radeons. I say that your video card is kinda old anyway, so switch to an nVidia GeForce FX. I have an FX 5700 and have no problems whatsoever with Halo. That may be the last resort for you, but if you do get it working on the card you currently have, it'll still play slow and won't be very fun. The Covenant will getcha.

SAME PROBLEM! I've had the game HALO sitting in a drawer since Christmas and haven't played it yet. The error message I get is:

"A problem occurred initializing direct3D. Hardware acceleration maybe disabled, please run DXDIAG."

I've run it and installed everything, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. No change! I'm running a new HP 3.2 Mhz. media center PC with an ATI X600 video card with at least 256 MB of video memory. Has anyone solve this problem yet?

Is there a need for a class action suit?

I have never tried to play halo on the computer but i know on some games like diablo it gives u choices on which video card you want to use. I have a radeon card and when i select to play diablo on the radeon direct 3D it does not work, but when i choose to use direct draw it works just fine.

I don't know if that info will help or nothing but worth a look.

I've got the same problem, I just installed Halo on an XP machine with DirectX 9.0c and after clicking on "Play" I jump to a black screen followed by the HALO logo box and an error message "problem occurred initializing Direct3D". DXDIAG shows NO problems. I updated to HALO version 1.4 which didn't change anything. I do have a Radeon X800 XT which I've read may contribute to the problem but haven't seen a solution for that (if it is the problem).

Not sure where to go next. Any help would be appreciated !

I've finally got my HALO working ! Thought it might be of interest to those in a similar situation. As mentioned above, I'm running the latest everything, Windows Xp w/SP2, Radeon X800 video card, DirectX 9.0c on a new 3.4 MHz machine with a 250 Gb drive.

I downloaded and ran the HALO 1.6 update after a total removal of HALO and a new install. No other updates were needed - HALO ROCKS !

Maybe it's time to get HALO 2 ?

Richard
