halo lack of hdware acceleration

have gateway 2000, running on windows98, plus. Got the game halo to play against my brother online 150 miles away from me. my machine says233 mhz 160 mb 8m nvidia riva 128. tried to upgrade through windows update to directx9.do I need to physically attach something to my computer (hardware)? or is this something I can download? I guess I need something like 756 mhz to operate this halo graphics or map? any suggestions? fatal error msg: A PROBLEM OCCURRED INTIALIZING DIRECT3D.HARDWARE ACCELERATION MAYBE DISABLED. PLEASE RUN DXDIAG. (not disabled, running fine) what do i do?Help???????

Doubt you could run halo on such an old system. Not even sure if its worth upgrading.
