I've never been able to get HL2 to run on integrated video. You really need an upgrade. I don't think that video chipset is supported.

I bet it doesn't run all that great on your brother's system...the MX4000 is a crap video card. It's really just a revamped version of the GF4 MX440 & it doesn't support DX9.

Integrated graphics suck & most of the "decent" games don't support it. If you wanna play HL2 or any of the latest games on your system, you're gonna have to get a "real" video card. Just don't get another MX4000...LOL!

Yeah!, am at a loss for what to say regarding you claiming it runs perfect on your bro's computer.

One thing is certain though, the framerates have got to be awful, if you can spare a little cash get the 9550 or 9600 for your system and do away with that intergrated crud.

Integrated video is only for word processing, surfing the web, etc. Any decent game will tax your system, and a good graphics card is a necessity.

The MX line of geforce cards are crap...they're mostly for word processing/graphics stuff as well. My MX card rarely cut it, but others will swear by it (obviously they probably run the games at 800x600 with no eye candy).

When playing games, the graphics card is one of the most important equipment you'll need. Why do you think hardcore gamers pay $350+ for a card? (And if you have a SLI-enabled board, you need to buy two of them). Save up the money, and get the best card you can afford. You'll notice the difference, and it'll make your bro's computer look so slow.

A. If you have an SLI mobo, you don't have to buy two cards right off.
B. You don't need to pay $350+ dollars on a video card, nor do you need to spend "as much as you can afford", which quite honestly can be a waste of money if the rest of your system can't keep up, or you don't want "eye candy" and obscenely high resolutions.

A Radeon 9600 Pro would be a good fit for you and your system. Will blow your brother's system away at that point without blowing all the money in your wallet away at the same time. ;-)

There are literally several dozens graphics cards to choose from. We'd have to know if your system has an AGP slot or not, & how much you wanna spend. My recommendation for the best budget card is the Radeon 9550 128MB/128-bit card. I just bought this one on sale for $60

Check your documentation and see if you have an AGP slot. If so, the 9550 or 9600 should be fine. If not, you need to buy a PCI gfx card (NOT PCI-E).

NO!! The Radeon 9550 & 9600 have been recommended to you, & you've been told NOT to get a 64-bit card! The 9250 is a piece of crap & it doesn't support DX9!

Are you serious?? How are you gonna install the new card (assuming you get one) without opening the case?? Everest, Belarc, or SANDRA may give you the answer, but if you wanna be 100% certain, pull the side panel & have a look inside.

Dude, you came here for advice, so why aren't you taking it. There's a great group of people here & most of them know their sh!t...your "friend" obviously does NOT! The MX4000 is a piece of crap, & AMD systems are great for gaming.

You've been advised to get either a Radeon 9550 or 9600...128MB/128-bit version. You can spend more for an even higher end cardif you want to, but don't waste your money on an MX4000 or Radeon 9250.

What is it that you don't understand?? I provided a link that has all sorts of benchtest charts of "modern" video cards. At least pick something from the list...the MX440 (especially the SE version) is worse than any card that's been mentioned in this thread so far!

My guess is you're trying to get off as cheaply as possible (too cheaply). I don't usually recommend this card, but get an FX5200 128MB & make sure it's the 128-bit version. You should be able to find one for about $50. Do not buy ANY 64-bit card, no matter how good a deal it may seem to be!

GO JAM GO! ROFL...

Yes, a 440MX was a good card for the money...like uh...3 years ago...

Now it's a cheap video card just to have something. Don't screw yourself by not spending a few dollars more. Get the 9550 or 9600.

Your friend, I'm sorry to say this, doesn't know what on earth he's talking about. Are you saying he said your computer isn't running it right because your Intel isn't as good as AMD? If so, that's NOT why your computer is performing far and away worse. Dude, you have a P4 2.8GHz compared to your brother's Athlon 1800!!! Get a good video card, and you will beat the ever loving snot out of his system! Good = Radeon 9550 or 9600 equivalent or better!

Here's also why we're recommending those cards, and not a $40 cheapo. You will ALREADY find games that can't run on the cards you're looking at. You're gonna then turn around and spend more money on ANOTHER card very soon. Buy it right the first time, and you won't be facing the same situation again so soon!

Sims 2 for example will NOT run on an MX440. And that's not even that demanding of the gfx card compared to a lot of games out there! Besides a severe lack of raw horsepower, that card does not support pixel shading, which is now becoming a common requirement these days.

There are also games out there that will technically run on it, but will be slow and ultra-crappy due to the lack of horsepower. Sounds like you're able to get your hands on more Nvidia cards. How about something with an NVidia Geforce 6200 chipset?

Taken from Half Life 2's system requirements:

"DirectX 9 level graphics card"

The 440MX is NOT a DX9 card, so the BARE MINIMUM of a card you should be looking at is the Nvidia FX5200 based cards. And believe me, I've seen enough FX5200 cards to know saying that's a DX9 card is like saying a you can tow a trailer by adding a hitch to a moped.
