hey everyone,
i wanna play half life 2 on my comp but i need to upgrade a little or have it run a little slow, here are my specs:
AMD Athlon 900 (running at 1000MHz)
256MB DDR400 (111MHz) (64MB Shared
onboard graphics
ECS 741GX-M Motherbvoard (Socket A)
I need more memory and more speed my motherboard is capable or running up to 33MHz FSB so should i get an Athlon xp 3200 or a Semptron 2600 or something else???
Which processor should i get???
Im probably going to get another stick of 256 and im getting a Raqdeon 9800 and possibly a Radeon 850
So i got graphics and memory covered but wich processor? im a student in high school and i live in cannada so i dont have much money im hoping to spend no more than 30$ on a processor
Can i run the demo on my specs totest it out?

Thx in advance!!!

The motherbaord is crappy, but that's besides the point. If you plan on running a Radeon 9800 you'd better have a decent power supply...no less that 350W with at least 18A on the +12v rail. You'd be better off to get a Radeon 9600XT 128MB card.

Increasing the RAM amount to 512MB is better than 256MB, but 1024MB is the preferred amount.

As for a CPU, upgrade to a Sempron...2500+ or better

ASUS A7N8X-X
Athlon XP 1800+
8.5 x 200MHz
1024MB PC3200 2.5-3-3-7
Asus A9550GE/TD 128MB
WinME/WinXP Pro SP1

p_dogg what do you mean half life 2 sucks, its one if the best games EVER made. Battlefield 2 is worth the time but area 51 is only cool in multiplayer and not singleplayer, theres 100000000's of the same zombies, and enemys are to repetitive.....

Just googled your motherboard...no offense, but it sucks performance wise. :-/

You need the RAM and the gfx card. Just get 2x512M sticks, not a 1GB stick. If a game needs more than a gig, your system won't run it anyway.

Usually plugging it in will disable the onboard video card.

Heropsyco, you havent a clue, that dosent work.

You have to change the settings in the bios. Oh, and i think you should get an AMD sempron, at LEAST 2600+.

Oh, and your motherboard sucks

IMO Halflife 2 is NOT the best game ever made.

LOL! I've worked with at least two different brand motherboards that used that particular chipset. In both cases, plugging in the new video card disables the onboard video. Other boards need a particular BIOS setting set to disable the onboard card, that chipset motherboard usually does not.

Watch who you're calling clueless because you don't have any idea who you're talking to. And besides that, show some common courtesy. There's no reason to say crap like that. But should you choose to do so, I'll shred whatever other ignorant crap you decide to write.

Okay, okay, i stand corrected. I was ignorant, because is honestly didnt know about the onboard graphics of that particular motherboard. With the many different computers i have built, using various branded motherboards, i havent come across a motherboard that disables onboard video when a new card is installed.

Sorry about my ignorance.

It's not your ignorance that bothered me. If you disagree, that's fine. State why and back it up with fact. That's what debate and discussion is about. No need to call someone clueless. That's out of line.

Probably not due to lack of CPU power and onboard gfx card.
