Hey everyone. I recently baught Grand theft auto Vice City. It installed fine but while in the game I get fine FPS but the game will stop for a sec then go again for a while then stop for a sec. These stop/starts happen no matter what settings I change even at 640X480 it still happens, I turned the frame limiter off but that made it worse. This is my system:
Sempron 2600+ @ 2.2GHz
1Gb DDR (2x512)
2x80GB HDD's
MSI 128Mb FX5500 (Crappy 64Bit)

Even with my crappy graphics card my system should easily be able to handle this game, my last system which was on old 600MHz K7 played GTA 3 more smooth compaired to this system.
Thanks for any help.

i think this might be because of disk access or something. defrag your drives.

also, it might be because of the AGP tihng, do you have 8x or 4x ? do you have the textures set up at their highest ? make them low and see

also, it might be VGA drivers. download the latest and install... have a look.. does it fix your problem ?

no ? ok, try disabling any antivirus running in the background. and remove any other programs that might try to accedd your drive while in the game...

still no ? re-install the game and try

install a different game and try

get the patch for the game and try

limit your RAM to 512 MB and try (some apps have problem with a lot of RAM !!!)

in your system info you have written: Sempron 2600+ OC 2.2GHz. OC meaning Over Clocked ? down clock it and try.

login to another user and run the game

err.. if all these fails, then I don't know !

let us know what happens !

I used to get this problem with my old Nvidia TI4600. Everytime I thought I'f sorted it, it happened again. Drove me mad. I replaced the card with a 6800 and never got it again. My suspicions where the card overheating or just being flogged too hard for too long....

Just my 2c

Sweet, thanks guys. I will give all those things a go. I defraged both my hard drives a couple of weeks ago so I dont think it is that, My graphics card is running at 8X so that should be fine too. Every other game like Dawn of War and HL2 runs fine it only happens during GTA3 and GTA Vice City.

smartypants, if it does turn out to be the actual graphics card I will be upgrading to a 6600GT soon anyways. I was gonna get a 9600Pro because that suits my setup better but my computer shop dosent stock it anymore : (
I hope they keep the AGP 6600GT in stock for me! I'll post back and tell you how things went.

I tried running the CPU at its stock settings but the start/stops still happen. Even with current and old drivers. I think I will just wait untill I have the 6600GT and see what happens. Thanks for the help guys.
