Graphics Upgrade Issue

Original Message

Subject: Graphics Upgrade Issue
OS: Windows XP
CPU/Ram: Intel
Comment:
Picked up a brand new ATI X1550 PCI Card (Not Express as the board does not support anything other than PCI). Uninstalled the old card, ran driver cleaner, shut down, removed old card, inserted new card, hit the power button and problem. When the PC started, right away the System Speaker > Beep...Beep Beep, nothing on the screen and no boot. Put the old card back in and now the PC hits the Windows Boot Screen and restarts (even booting to Safe Mode).

Any Idea?

This is rediculous. This card was brand new. Now here is what I tryed.

1. Everything hooked up and NEW Card installed - Beeping.

2. Everything hooked up and NO Card installed - Beeping.

3. Everything hooked up and OLD Card installed - Computer boots fine.

4. Everything hooked up and ON BOARD Card Enabled - Computer boots fine.

The fan on the new card spins up but the beeping occurs with the card istalled or not installed. The card seems to have power but not being recognized. Now, is there a possibility that this motherboard for some reason doesn't support this newer card or do you think this card is just Dead from the Factory?

If you checked the beep code link I posted, "1 long, 2 short" = "Either video adapter is bad or is not seated properly"

Did you test the card in another system? How about a different PCI slot?

I read all that. It is seated properly and I just didn't want to accept that this New card was bad.

"Did you test the card in another system? How about a different PCI slot?"

Tested it in all 3 PCI slots and as for another computer....

Threw it in the Dell 8100, AGP System, Set Primary video in bios to Auto (was AGP), removed current card and all other cards, stuck in the X1550. In this computer the card again has power (fan is spinning away), system boots (completely as I have to hold in the power button to get it to power down) but nothing on the screen.

I don't know why you would let it boot completely...if you're not getting the POST screen display, the card isn't working. The only other thing I can suggest is to double check the PCI standard (2.1, 2.2, 2.3) between the card & the board.

Well the link to the MoBo above gave me this "3 x PCI (PCI 2.2 compliant)".

For the X1550 I am not to sure where I would find what it supports. On the box all I could find was "System Requirements - 3.3v PCI bus". On the card all I could come up with was "MPCI1".

I Have a bad feeling that PCI 2.2 does not support 3.3v PCI Cards >.<

Well, I went down and picked up a BFG 256 MB GeForce 6200 OC and installed it. The computer booted fine and I installed NVIDIA Stock drivers. The result, upgrading from the OLD 64MB MX440 to the NEW 256MB 6200 OC, I went from 5-10 fps to 10-20 fps. I am guessing that I set my expectations too high when it comes to computers.

Well, you definitely set your expectations too high when it comes to standard PCI cards. The FX5500 256MB/128-bit is about as good as it gets without spending a ridiculous amount of money.

Is the FX5500 better than the 6200 or just better in price? I picked up the 6200 for only $15 more than the FX5500.

I'm not saying you would have been more happy with the FX5500...you would be disappointed either way. But at least you would have spent $15 less. The PCI bus is the limiting factor for graphics performance, that's why it was abandoned many years ago.
