My old and trusty Geforce 7800 GS has
started givimg me problems after a format on
my pc and a clean windows install, i made
sure i got the drivers back on, updated
everything i could and then started installing
my games, First one being a old game called
Rome Total War which doesnt need a lot to
run but when its in the loading screen, it lags
alot and i get these white rectangles and
squares that come all over and when its done
loading i get a speed boost in the game where
everything is just super fast. Weird thing is
after that the game runs fine, videos of other
games work as well but as soon as it comes
to loading screens something messes up. Even a game like [Prototype] gives no problem in game play but loading screens lag out with white squares.

Is this my trusty 7800 beginning to die out?
could it be driver related? or is there anything
else that can cause this? since this pc is
passing down to my bro and im worried that
the gpu is going to end soon. Im sure its not overheating since the card is 43c on idle and a max of 52c on load.

i need a fix since a new AGP card is out of the
option and a hole new pc for him is even less
of a chance.

If you look at this problem from a logical standpoint...

1. Your video card was working fine.
2. You re-installed your OS after a format
3. Now your video card isn't working fine.

If you've gotten the latest video drivers, make sure you OS is completely up to date, and also that your motherboard drivers are completely up to date.

Now that is good advice. Did you install the motherboard drivers right after you installed Vista? Do you have all the Vista compatible drivers for the machine?

Sorry it took me so long to respond.

But anyway like i said i got all the drivers back on, not 100%
sure if they the latest, is there a free program i can use to show
me the latest drivers and provide a link to download it?
