Hi I have been forced by my wife to get rid of my much loved Samsung syncmaster 957df 19inch crt monitor... a great gaming monitor, but according to her, way to big and ugly... she soes not understand the differences between CRT and TFT for us gamers!!!!
So can anyone reccomend a good TFT 17 to 19 inch "gaming" monitor(PS I run unreal tournament 2004 at 1600x1200)
Far Cry, half life 2, Unreal Tournament 2004, Grand Prix 4

i would use CRT monitor for gaming, cuz i read a artical from PC world. it compares CRT and LCD/TFT. and it said for text, TFT/LCD monitor is great, but for graphic, image, video, CRT would be the better choice. and thats true for me, cuz i play games on my desktop and laptop. both using Nvida FX 5900 and both have the same side of display view. and i can see the difference. the graphic on CRT is slightly better than the TFT/LCD. but the text on the laptop looks clear than the CRT. so its up to you. if you are a gamer, i recommand CRT monitor, if not and you want to save more space, get LCD/TFT. well, you can keep your monitor you are using. if you think the monitor is ugly, use it in the dark room and turn off all the light(all the monitors look the same in a dark room that without light). ;-)
P4 3.2GHZ
kingstom 1GB DDR 3200
Nvidia geforce FX 5950 256mb

You should thank your wife for 'letting' you toss out that old 19" CRT that was a space-saver. Now you can move up to a real gaming monitor, a 21" Trinitron. :)
If you let your wife dictate what computer hardware is connected to your computer, on your desk, in your office... She won't be happy unless she picks your new monitor for you.
Good Luck with the whole wife thing.

bitboy is right...if that pc's for gaming, you're actually downgrading yourself. If any of the TFT/LCD's are capable of doing games well, they will be in the very high price range. My brother only uses his computer to play games...and ever since he switched to his tft monitor, he's been complaining. He plays on my computer sometimes because it's quicker lol. And my 21" CRT was cheaper than his 17" TFT.
TFT's have a slow response time...about 25 ms. So when the action's going fast, ie: any video game or dvd, you're going to have alot of motion blurring.
TFT's also work best at their native resolution...if you have to lower the resolution to get decent frame rates, the TFT will have to stretch the picture to fit your screen, and it won't do it well.
So don't expect your gaming experience to improve if you "upgrade" to a TFT. It's different technology...and each technology has its pros and cons.
Then again, if you play slow moving games like solitaire or a MMO (online roleplaying game), then you'll be fine. Then again, my bro also plays MMO's and complains still

Hey Darren
A great Gaming LCD is a Samsung SyncMaster 172x very fast 12ms responce time and a great bright crisp screen, everything looks great at 1280 x 1024 @ 75Hz games like UT2004, NFSU2, C.O.D. I have been using monitor for the past 6 months now and cant fault it, its the nicest looking TFT LCD, comes with both RGB & DVI inputs, Tilt and height adjustable overall a very nice LCD from Samsung.
