whats up with everyone saying the nvidia geforce fx 5200 128MB sucks? it doesnt even suck.. i just recently switched from my old sucky comp to a new dell with P4 2.7 Ghz processor and i get 100 fps flat on cs.. and i get well over 70 fps on Frozen THrone.. even though the hting on Tom's Hardware said fps for the fx5200 is only 30 on TFT.. even with all the settings on high my fx5200 still gives me over 60 fps, so all you geforce fx 5200 haters.. it IS a good card.. even though it IS a budget card

i agree, i'm running the FX5200 ultra 128 MB, and i've been quite pleased. My question is, would this card be able to run Doom 3? i know it wouldn't run it very well, but with all of the video options turned all the way down, would the game run smoothly?

The FX5200 card "sucks" if you want high resolutions with image quality up, particularly in DirectX 9 games. The card simply lacks the raw horsepower needed to do such things.

However, the card is priced obviously very attractively.

Keep in mind, it's still a current gen card. Yes, it will do anything you could ever want in CS, no question. In defense of its critics, that game is VERY old, so any card can do that. You can't say it's a good card because of that. Warcraft 3 is also not a good comparison of video cards relative to each other. But you prove what I've been saying all along, there is a spot in the market for this card. It sounds like it fits you guys like a glove, and that's fine.

However, the card is, no doubt, a "throw away." You will see it's age VERY quickly, since DX9 games are about to hit the shelves.

Case in point, Doom3 (even though it's not directX 9). Yes, the FX5200 will run it. But your resolution and IQ are gonna have to be turned down significantly to get acceptable frame rates probably next to lowest. Half Life 2 will probably be even worse.

For avid gamers on a budget, you will have to replace the card most likely in a year. Not that it's a big deal, you didn't spend a lot of money on it anyway. At that point, you can pick up the next card at the same price range and be happy again.

For me? No, I want at least 1024x768 in my games. Some anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering good, too! ;-) I plopped down $200 for a 9800 pro. However, I'm not gonna have to upgrade my card necessarily next year either, but I'm an idiot and probably will. ;-)

nvidia cards r very good. i think geforce 4 fx 5200 is great, but if ucompare it to radeon 9800pro it does suck. see radeon 9800pro has better shaders, it runs on dx9.0 and it has smoothvision 2.1

Agreed-Halo and UT2003 perform impressively and quire playable on my FX5200 (128MB) using the ForceWare 61.76 at 800x600 resoultion.I'm getting The Sims 2-and EA says the FX5200 will be supported for that game. You'd need a Radeon 9800/X800/ or nVIDA GeForce 5900/5950/6800 for best gameplay with Doom 3-but your FX5200 may handle Doom at a low graphics quality setting.

I think I came to the conclusion that it sucked because the 256mb one I had did run games at a noticably lower standard than my 128mb Ti4200. I guess at the time of the FX range launch, after hearing all the hype I expected the entry-level FX (The 5200) to perhaps be a DX9 compatible replacement for the Ti range especially considering it cost as much as a Ti4600 upon launch and I expected the upper FX range to be a quantum leap of standards all together.

I was very disappointed.

The one I had was an XFX 256mb FX5200 and the box said "If ever there was a reason to feel sorry for the competition, this is it" Perhaps it should have said: " Hey, It's cheap. You get what you pay for"

When the FX5200 went back, the old Geforce2 MX200 32mb was dusted off from it's two year retirement (Ti4200 was installed in a different machine by now) Tried it on COD and performance was roughly on par (I.E - not very impressed)

My point is that it is a cheap card, which is fine. It's good for older games but no better, sometimes worse than previouis generation cards on more recent games. Cards that can be had for less money too!!.

I had a 256mb FX5200 about 8 months ago now. The card did the job for me until I bought Farcry. I was ok on medium settings until I entered the 'indoor' levels which brought my FX5200, almost, to a stand still. Because this card has done me proud for the previous year or so I decided to stick with FX and got myself an FX5900 XT. I soon saw the major improvment in quality and speed. I know the XT for the FX range is a slower version but if I need to change my card in a years time I have got my money's worth.

Having said all that. The FX5200 doesn't suck. It was a great but short lived introduction to DX9 and did the job for me but I wouldn't buy one now and if I still had one and was hopeing to play the latest and future games I would be concidering an upgrade but Hey.... thats technology for you.

"i get 100 fps flat on cs.. and i get well over 70 fps on Frozen THrone"

did he just say that!? ::holding stomache::

while 100 fps is impressive, getting 100 in CS is isnt monumental, CS will run just fine on a 500mhz w/ a gforce2. and FIY RTS games arent big graphically AT ALL!!!
Ive seen a fx5200 ultra run games before. I fell over laughing.

For all the smart ppl out there , not every one is very rich , and that they will have everything that they desire all the time , 2nd of all technology is every incearseing and to think of it to keep up is rather Dumb , I had a Geforce 440Mx Se then shifted to GeForceFx 5200 128ram . It has given me all the things i require now , yes in the future it may not give what will be required , but for now , its a low end card which fulfils out needs.

the thing is taht the mx4200 costs less and is a bunch better than the 5200. Im not sure why this is but its an odd thing like that.

If you can play Halo PC just fine, then you have no problem to fix.

lol, anyone who plans to play 5200 with half-life 2 is screwed. Have you even seen the benchmarks? lol 5200,5600, and 5900 series looked like joke cards compared to the radeon cards... lol... 10 fps.. at low resolutions. It was even said that the TI4600 runs current DX9.0 games better then nvidia's FX series cards. Point is, if you play games that require no 3D processing, lol you're fine with 5200.. i'm warning u to stick with UT2K4 and counterstrike, games of that sort... You get a card with crappy clock speeds, put some cheap DX9 capabilities, wow you got a PieceOfS*** 5200.

Halo 2 Plx.
