I started a topic below called "Halo Troubles". It was recommended to me that I should get the Geforce 6600. I've been looking around on eBay, and there seems to be lots of versions! Like eVGA, XFX, PCI-"Express", GT.... which one is it? Most of them have different artwork on the boxes, or shapes of boxes, for that matter. Are they all the same?

In your other post, you never answered the questions that were asked about your system. The 1st thing you need to do is find out what slot you have available for a video upgrade...standard PCI or AGP? You definitely do NOT have PCI-express. If it's standard PCI, you're screwed. There are very few "decent" PCI cards available, & for the most part, they suck. But if it's AGP, you have many different cards to choose from. Don't shop eBay...shop at a "real" online store. And don't waste your money on a 256MB card, they're no faster than the 128MB version of the same card.

Look at the card's accessories, cooling device and warranty package and then go with the cheapest of the pack.

You dont have PCI express. Compaqs dont come with PCI-Express. Since you have only PCI you really cant get a 6600. I dont know what card you have now but if you are using onboard graphics then maybe you should go for a 5500.

It's obvious that Hewunder1 isn't very computer savy. I don't know how many times he's been told that he does NOT have PCI-Express! If you go back to his earlier post about Halo, damasta55r told him in the very 1st response:

"You need to get a PCI CARD, best would be 5200 or 5700LE"

But others ignored that statement & kept recommending AGP cards like the 6600. I've been saying all along...you should NOT recommend a card without 1st knowing what slot is available!

Hewunder1, this should have been settled days ago. Not only were you told, but all you had to do was open the case & take a look! How the hell are you gonna upgrade your video card if you're too scared to open the freakin case???

Go to the blackboard & write this 10 times:

I have PCI. I do NOT have PCI-Express! I do NOT have AGP! I MUST get a PCI card!

After that's finally sunk in, go to newegg & order either one of these cards:

Ok let me put my crayons away.

I found a tool called powerstrip on Guru3d.com

Here is the following after playing with some cards

Asus FX5200 256MB 128bit V9520 (Budget £60)
Core 250 Mem 265
Can be tweaked to 300/400 but why? it still drops to 40FPs at times

My Old Elsa Geforce 2Ti 64MB
Core 250
Mem 400 -Slow now but was fast a few years back

Connect3D Radeon 9550 256MB (Budget £46)
Core 250
Mem 250 falls over even at the slightest tweak

My (PNY) Geforce 6 (6600 non GT) 128bit dual 400MHz Ramdac

reported Core 300
and Mem 500

No clocking with frame limiter off averages around 140FPS peaks at 412FPS
using 3D Marks 03 as a benchmark. (note 3D now etc is used when benchmarking lower spec pc may not generate same FPS)

(Frame limiter - Traction control)

basically runs in Quality mode without problems can Run Doom3 in high mode

you get what you pay for £40 - £60 will buy junk (5 second wonder) a real card starts at £100 - £250

----------
PT2

you may continue.

1.AGP slot big brown thing not to be confused with the AMR mistake of a slot

2.Search for Dxdiag.exe look at the graphics tab see if the AGP Texture are greyed out.

3.Download and run Sis Sandra it will mention if there is an AGP slot (not faultless though)

4.I worked for Compaq as a sub contractor (D.E.R.A before they where taken over Compaq's don't have PCI Express some model do have AGP.

I need a serial number to determine if yours does.

Also try Savastore for parts they used to be Watford electronics.

Ok the above are AGP cards

System specs would be helpful a 486 has PCI slots but tends to crash if you try to put some decent into it.

As other reply mentioned it's hard to help with lack of info.

I have not yet lost a PC by opening it and with only +/- 12V 5V there is no danger involved as long as your not hot plugging.

With the prices of boards dropping it may be worth buying a new board and using the current bits.

and cos someones going to bring it up the 6600 was £130

just don't bother me about grammer or spelling.
I didid great.

Ya know what? I'm NOT very computer savy. And I always like it when people make a big deal out of little, not very important things like this, on the internet. ESPECIALLY when they criticize other people, and TRY to make them look bad. And, what's this? Oh yeah, a quote! From my first post!

"I have Directx 9.0, an AMD Athalon XP 3000+ processor, a PCI bus, and 2.10 GHz."

It says I have a PCI bus... that's weird, because you said I never said I did! And then someone wasn't sure if I had AGP or not, and I tried to search for THAT; the little conversation below was IF I had one, or how I could tell. And when I asked this:

"Would it be better if I got the 5700LE for AGP or PCI? Or does it really matter?"

It was a simple question. Which is better, basically, PCI or AGP? I hope you didn't read that the wrong way... Peace out! And don't kill anyone over computers! :)

It's most likely you will have an agp slot but it also seems that you are using onboard video?

Go HERE and download version 1.29 of cpu-z

Run the program
Once the program is up n running go to the mainboard tab

Note who the manufacturer is and which model.

Also,at the bottom of the mainboard tab is 'graphic interface'
which may or may not tell you what you are using?

If you do have agp get the 'GT'

Look Dude (or Dudette)...the AGP slot uses the PCI bus, so it wouldn't be listed as AGP in Device Manager, it would be listed as PCI bus 2. A regular PCI slot is listed as PCI bus 1. I didn't wanna get into an in depth explanation about that because I didn't wanna confuse you even more.

You were told that you need a PCI card, but you continued to ask about AGP. Then you were told to open the case & have a look:

"open up the case?.. Look inside.. if yo see one slot thatsplaced different next to the PCI slots ( Which all willlook the same) Then thats a AGP slot.."

"The agp slot is the one above the pci slots thats placed slightly farther back from the normal pci slots. Its brown."

Had you opened the case, this issue would have been settled right then & there, but for whatever reason, you apparently didn't wanna do that & continued to ask questions about AGP & PCI-Express. It certainly didn't help matters when other people started jumping in telling you to get a GeForce 6600 without even knowing what slot type you had!

I gave you the best answers I could (& nicely I might add). And I told you that "You definitely do NOT have PCI-express." (look at the 1st response in the thread). But you continued to ignore my responses & countered with: "PCI! PCI! And how can I tell if it's Express"

So I copped a 'tude & wrote response # 7, but if you read it over, I gave you the proper answer & recommended which cards to get. The only others than have given you the correct advice were damasta55r in your "Halo" thread, & HydraFury in response # 7 of this thread. But you ignored ALL three of us!

Go ahead, run out & buy yourself a 6600 AGP or PCI-Express card. But be sure to post back with an apology when you find out that it won't fit & you just wasted $100+ for a card that's not compatible with your system.

Hi jam

Heres how I see it.

In his first post in his other thread he says...

KM400(which is a via chipset)
http://www.via.com.tw/en/products/chipsets/k7-series/km400/
Which is probably using 64mb for the onboard S3 graphics, hence the 448mb of ram he has?
This chipset has agp support
He also has an XP3000+

PCI card with those specs?

I have to point this out, not picking on this poor guy, but it's funny anyway...

"It says I have a PCI bus... that's weird, because you said I never said I did!"

To recap, Hewunder1 argued about it being PCI, said himself it's PCI (even though as Jam pointed out, this doesn't actually determine if you have an AGP slot or not), was told by others it was PCI, then blasts Jam because Hewunder1 said it was PCI from the get go. This is apparently a problem on Jam's end for telling him what Hewunder1 said himself, and others on the forum have been telling him for quite sometime.

Thanks guys, this made my crappy day bearable. LOL...

Why do you think I learned computer hardware?

Hi All,

I too have a query regarding the GeForce 6600. I need to replace my Radeon 7500 with the GeForce as I've been told that this will enhance the gameplay of my Sims 2 game? I'm an object recolourer and creator and need to have something that will help the photos I need to take of the objects to come out as clear as possible. I ordinarily get lots of annoying jagged edges! I have been recommended to purchase a 1GB GeForce card from my local computer pitstop. I tried to do research on it first, but failed to come up with anything! I have found the 128Mb and the 256Mb, so does this mean that the 1GB doesn't exist? Any help or recommendation would be very much appreciated!

Thank you.
