I'm thinking of making a new gaming system using dual 1.6ghz Opteron processors. Considering Opteron processors are essentianly AMD 64 processors and vice versa. Using two would be great, right? Also most Opteron Mobos support up to 8gb of ram but don't have agp ports...There are still some decent pci fxcards. Most other things such as Ram and harddrive would be similair to a regular system. The biggest benefit of this system is the 2 1.6ghz processors can be found on ebay for as little as $100 dollars a piece. Would this be effective for gaming? Because the Opteron is made for server?

Hi mate,i think your getting a the wrong idea, just because you have two cpu in a system doesn't mean that a games will be able to harness the power of both at the same time,as i see it the only real gain in having to cpu in you system is if your in to vid editing and runs lots of task at the same time.
I may be wrong but i'am pretty sure i'am not,my advice to you is to get the best amd 64 you can get within your limit, making sure its a socket 939 cpu though as 939 offer the best performance and upgrade path, this way you you can get a agp or pci-E
graphics card which offers way better performance in the latest games, depending on what gphx card you get.
My last bit of advice is to have a look at the amd 64 3000,this is a awesome cpu with 99% of the time can be overclocked to insane levels and i feel offer the best bang for your bucks.
Hope this helps
~david

Thanks for the comment, I'v been looking at the 3000+ and for the price its a good deal. If I find a config that I feal good about I might go into it but either I'm going to use an AMD processor.

Try to avoid purchasing an athlon xp and go with probably and athlon 64 3200+, which can be had for around $200 on ebay. There are two different kinds of 64 3200+, one is socket 754 and the other is socket 939. Both are very good for gaming, but the socket 939 processor costs a bit more.

Socket 939 motherboards would allow you to upgrade in the future. Also, you can get NForce 4 chipsets currently for only Socket 939, so I would go Socket 939 if possible.
