I just bought an nvidia GeForce 6800 GS. I'm into online gaming, and expected to see a real performance increase, especially after I OCed it a little and unlocked extra pipelines and vertex shaders (my first stab at that). But I'm still getting about the same performance as I'd been getting on my old card (an ATI Radeon All-In-Wonder).

It usually peaks at about 40 fps in World of Warcraft with all the settings up, but frequently slows down to about 25. It's frustrating to have these framerates on a low-polygon, low-lighting-effect game like that. Even more disappointing is its performance in games that use a lot of advance lighting effects and bumpmaps.

My current specs are:
Intel P4 w/ HT at 3Ghz,
nVidia GeForce 6800 GS
2Gb Kingston DDR RAM
Western Digital 120G SATA HD

Is there something I'm missing? From all the reviews I've read, I feel like I should be getting at least 60fps on pretty much anything the gaming industry can throw at me. Any suggestions for increasing my performance?

You probably already have but have you installed the latest drivers? especially the nvidia ones and most people forget about the chipset drivers.

LOL, bring on anyone with an X800 or X850 against a system like mine with a 7800GT. If they're performing better than your system, your system is jacked.

Houston probably hit the nail on the head. Did you update your chipset drivers, especially if your mobo has a VIA or SIS chipset?

I hadn't updated the chipset drivers, but I just did, and the performance hasn't really changed. I have an Asus P4P800-E mobo, which has the Intel 865PE chipset.

I know that my processor is somewhat of a bottleneck on my system (sad, since it's still pretty decent), but that should keep me from getting huge framerates, not 50-60.

I know next to nothing about this stuff, but I know that I haven't flashed the BIOS in forever - might that help anything?

If I really can't get it up to speed in the next day or so, I'll eat the shipping cost and return it and put my x800 all-in-wonder back in, as it seemed to perform better in EQ2 as well as other games.

I really appreciate the help on this. You guys rock.
