Reply: (edit)If you don't mind me asking, why do you HAVE to use Windows 2000 Pro? Wouldn't using XP Pro make a little more sense? Honestly, I've gotten games to run in it but it's a pain in the @$$.

Reply: (edit)Most newer games and games requiring directx 7 or higher have little trouble running in win2000, while many of the older games and non directx games have nothing but problems. Still, win2000 is a much better gaming platform than winNT was, but still not as good as win98 or WinXP.

Reply: (edit)I personally think 98 was a far superior gaming platform than XP. XP seems to run slower because of the services I keep running. I could disable them but it's a hell of a lot easier to just boot 98 from the get go if I plan on gaming!

Reply: (edit)I have used windows XP, and for as many games I have had difficulty running under windows 2000 I have had nearly as many problems with XP. In my experience windows XP's 'compatibility' mode is mostly worthless I have games that wouldn't run on xp run on 2000 and games that won't run on 2000 will run on XP. For windows 98 I have heard that It dosn't use memory over 256MB efficiently. not sure what to do...

Reply: (edit)I've been running 2000 for a while, and I've never had any problems with games. Counterstrike, Half-Life, Deus Ex, Halo, Homeworld, Jedi Knight, Jedi Outcast, Dark Forces, King's Quest 6, UT ... Well, I guess I don't play very many games. But I think it's a long-standing myth that you can't use 2K for gaming. 2000 and XP use the same drivers, most of the time. As for increasing performance in 2K, what I've done is fixed the pagefile size (nobody agrees whether this is good or not) and put it on my faster virtual RAID drive. I've also disabled extraneous services - search google for "win2k services guide." There's also the general things like cleaning out your startup folder and also the "Run" folder in the registry. And then I overclock =P. But overall, after using both XP and 2K, I prefer 2K. Try them both out if you can, and then decide. - mako

Reply: (edit)I have used w2k and win98SE for a long time. And I can tell you, 2000 is horrible for games, I have noticed it doesn't handle online game connections well either. 2000 was built for stabilty not compatibility. Where as Win98 is built for compatability vs stabilty. Windows 2000 was designed to emulate older (and even newer) games, it disables many options and commands during such emulation. Thus, I would recomend that you first install Win98SE then install on the other half of your hard drive (partition first of course) Installing Win2000. Then when you boot, just select 2000 for all your applications besides games, when you want to game just boot to your Win98SE.

Reply: (edit)Few things I had to point out, and before you jump on me know that I've used every Windows OS since 95 and was our in-house tech for two years. Now... I'm sorry folks, but anyone that's still using Windows 98SE is a few french fries of a happy meal. Stable and Win98 do not go anywhere near each other. Yes, Win2000 is so far the most stable OS by Microsoft. I wouldn't say best because XP is built off 2000, but with more features and compatibility. Yes, you need to activate XP, but if you paid for it, what do you care? It takes 30 seconds. Yes, the compatibility mode in XP doesn't work all the time, but nobody claims it does. It can help sometimes. Finally, unless there's some old game out there that doesn't run on XP, and you just can't let go of it, dump 98. Honestly... you won't see any games coming out that say "Windows 98SE or lower". Do yourself a favor and get a more stable, secure, supported, and all together better OS.

Reply: (edit)secure..that's funny you mentioned that cuz i don't have to worry about msblaster, and all those other Win2K/XP directed worms..among other things..anymore Anyway..I've had no problems running any games on Win2K, BUT it is harder on the video subsystem..Now that I've reinstalled 98 my games DO run better..AND I have tried XP..I was only able to put up with it for <24 hours..before I reinstalled 2K PIII 800, 320MB Sdram, PCI GF4440SE..not the best but at least somewhat comparable to what you have.. -BTW your GeForce Ti4200 w/ 128MB DDR is overkill for your setup

Reply: (edit)Well... Windows 2000 is 95% compatible with Windows 98, and in theory Windows XP in 100% compatible with Windows 98, however running Windows 2000, my system did not crash while gaming like XP Does, but then again, XP is the "newer" one, and they are still working out the bugs. Run XP, disable all the services... and then hopefully enjoy. ~Bob "Windows has crashed please reboot using LINUX" AMD Athlon XP 3200+@2.42Ghz 1.5GBDDR@400Mhz nVidia FX5900 w/256MBDDR Six level RAID 0 Array for the gaming files 1/5 RAID 5 Array for Critial Data 512MB RAM DRIVE (3.5GB/sec) MSI-6570
