Hi all. I recently upgraded my video card to a 6600GT. I've downloaded the latest drivers etc. Games can now run with the eye candy turned up, but the PC locks up after a few minutes. Even Star wars KOTR locks up on the menu screens. Any suggestions?
I thought about reinstalling them but can that be done without losing save games?(I've got about 40hrs invested in KOTR, almost finished and i'd hate to have to start again)

So long, and thanks for all the fish!

Maybe running too hot?

Also I read that its best to clean ur system of nvidia drivers before upgrading gfx card. Then slot in, and then download latest driver.

Take the side off ur machine and see if it runs for longer before crashing. If so, then its heat.

First, chuck that cruddy pentium for an AMD 64 FX in its place. Then, make sure it's not heat. Maybe your one or two or your fans have stopped. Or, the fans you have can't keep up with the heat your processor is producing. It could even be the heat on your video card's processor. See if the fan is working on that. Once you upgrade to an Athlon 64 FX (which you will OR ELSE), you should seriously consider also upgrading your cooling system, like installing higher performance fans (and more of them) or getting a liquid cooling system. Or, if you wanna go EXTREME, you could try installing a phase-change system(AC on steroids) or, even crazier, DRY ICE. But installing and maintaining these(especially the dry ice) can be very dangerous to your PC. Just make sure you know what yer doing. BTW: yes, all Intel processors suck for games and 3D.

Hahahahahahahahaha!!!

Are you a disgruntled ex-Dell customer or something??

One hell of a drastic (and expensive) soulution!!

Anyway,if it's a heat problem, you can check the processor temperature in the BIOS under 'PC health Status' if it's too high, try removing the side of the case to see whether the fan is still working, if not, replace it with a working one and some decent thermal compound.

HOWEVER, if the problem started when you upgraded to the new card, it could be a PSU problem. Newer graphics cards are more power hungry during games, so require a good PSU. What power supply are you using?

Of course, it could be a faulty card too!

Try putting your old card back in and see if the problem stops, if it does then the new card is the problem (process of elimination).Simply send your new card back for a working replacement.

Cheers for the suggestions. I'm not gonna go down the AMD replacing route cause the pc is only 3 mths old. I tried running with the side off and it made no difference. I know this is a dumb question but how do i check the bios? And assuming i can get in, what should the temp be?

So long, and thanks for all the fish!
