Games Keep Crashing

This is a new problem that's just developed, and I have no idea why: any game I play on the computer ends up crashing.
To name some there's Black and White 2, and Call of Duty 4. B&W2 was installed recently, but CoD4 has been there since Christmas and there's never been any trouble with it before.
The exact way that the crash happens is that i'll be playing the game, then suddenly it appears to minimise itself with a quarter of the desktop blackened out. After a moment or two an error message saying that "the program encountered an error and must be closed" appears.
