Comment: Hi all. I am having a VERY strange problem with my computer. Every now and then while playing any of my games the computer will suddenly freeze and there is this LOUD screaming/Screaching noise which changes tone a few times then flat lines on a single tone after a minute or so requiring me to re-boot. I have tried all different drivers and am currently running everything with latest drivers. My system spec..... Athlon 64 3200+ 2.2GHz 1Gb PC3200 ram Gigabyte K8NSNXP MOTHERBOARD BFG Geforce 6800GT AGP Creative Audigy Player I have tried moving the sound card to another slot but that didn't help. I have formatted and re-installed XP but that didn't work either so i know it's not a software problem. Is anyone else having the same problem? Games i play that crash... Battlefield 2 Counter Strike Source Warhammer 40k dawn of war Age of empires 3.... the list goes on. thanks in advance Steve pheonix.flash@gmail.com

Reply: (edit)What are your system temps like? Is your CPU or Video card overheating?, are the fans and heatsinks installed properly (decent thermal compound, tight fit, right type etc) and in working order free from dust?, what are room temps like? is your computer next to a heater/radiator? What PSU are you using? It could be locking up due to excessive heat build-up, since games push the processor etc harder than just dawdling round on the internet, it could also be the PSU struggling to cope with the extra load. Never trust cheapo no-make PSU's regardless of their wattage! AMD AthlonXP 2200+ Abit NF7-S v2.0 Geforce4 Ti4200 128mb 1GB Crucial PC2700 80GB & 120GB SATA HDD's SB Audigy2 ZS Enermax Noisetaker 485W

Reply: (edit)Hi, the temperatures are all average, cpu is usually 45c under load and the Gpu temp never goes above 70c under load. Its nothing to do with heat because the case is well ventalated and the room it is in is never above 20c at most. All fans are clear of dust etc as i clean it all every sunday and all the heat sinks are all properly secured with arctic silver compund on eberything. It also can't be the PSU because i have tried 3 seperate 450w-550w ones in there as i thought it may be that as well. It's really pi***ng me off now :-( Have you heard of this happening before?

Reply: (edit)Does this noise happen if you disable the sound card and use the onboard sound? Gigabyte GA-K8NXP-SLI AMD Athlon 64 FX-55 Corsair 512X4 2048mb 2X WD Raptor 74gb 10K 2X 256 6800 GT Raid-0 WinXP Pro X64

Reply: (edit)To be honest i tried that but the sound quality and performance hit was so bad i didn't keep it like that for long. It was like trying to play battlefield 2 on a pentium 133. :-) well not that bad obviously but it was unplayable so it was hard to really test it, even with all graphics turned down. do you think it may be my sound card?

Reply: (edit)Grasping to assist. Actually, I doubt a sound card would make your games freeze. However, a sound card might make loud screeching noise. Why can't you play the game with onboard sound? Of course the sound quality takes a hit but the game should play fine. Especially in low settings. Obviously you're not getting any error messageing? Oh and my computer does something similar once in a blue moon. I never worry about it because its so rare. But when it does, I get a screeching noise then my computer automatically restarts. I can't recall exactly but I think I got an error message about a driver that appears to be working fine most of the time. :) Gigabyte GA-K8NXP-SLI AMD Athlon 64 FX-55 Corsair 512X4 2048mb 2X WD Raptor 74gb 10K 2X 256 6800 GT Raid-0 WinXP Pro X64
