OS: Windows XP SP2
CPU/Ram: AMD Athlon XP 2600+ 512m
Comment:

First my "specs"

AMD Athlon Xp 2600+ (2.1ghz)

Asus Mobo A7V8X-X rev 1014 beta 002

Kingston 512mb KVS333mhz

Saphire ATI Radeon 9600SE 128mb

400watt Power Supply

Windows XP SP2 (all updates)

VIA Hyperion 5.06a

Ati Catlyst 5.11

OK...

My problem is at 12.5*166/33 multiplier(default) 2.1ghz it runs pretty stable until i try to watch a streaming video off the net or play any game(CS:Source,Half Life 2,etc..). Any Game freezes within 5 minutes of initial gameplay and the videos freeze comp right after buffering (all crashes are the same hard lock mouse freezes sound cuts off,etc..)

Ive tried just about every single driver combination possible. The only solution i found was to put my multiplyer in bios at 12.5*133/33 ....cutting it in half at 1666ghz... this is unaceptable! but its stable. Games run all day no freezes or crashes even while streaming media. This is driving me mad, I would rather like what i paid for to work.. im looking for a fix that will make this stable at 2.1ghz. I just updated my bios to beta 002 and it ran for like 15 minutes till crash :/. Ive tried Agp 4x didnt work. Ive even tried the VIA AGP switch to Microsofts driver ..didnt work. Its been almost a year and a half.. with no fix....PLEASE someone Help me!!!!!!!!

- double check all your BIOS settings?

- what are your system & CPU temps? (at idle & under load)

- VIA Hyperion 5.06a. From viaarena.com: "if you are not utilizing a VIA SATA or RAID controller in your system, the Hyperion 4in1 package may be a better download choice" (Version - 4.56v)

http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=420&OSID=1&CatID=1070

- have you ever tested your RAM with memtest86?

http://www.memtest86.com/#download0

- 400watt Power Supply. What are the specs? Make/model, amperage on +12v line.

- Saphire ATI Radeon 9600SE 128mb is not a good card for gaming. SE = 64-bit

The Mobo sits nicely at 26.Bios settings as far as ive tried are not the problem.
Tried all versions of Hyperion all same result.
The Cpu Temp is 45 gaming 55.
The voltage is actually my biggest concern +12V is at 12.412-12.680
+5V 4.55-4.757
+3.3V 3.024-2.902
VCore 1.648
The power supply is Extremo Power 550w.
so actually power supply is 150 over what i thought..
Radeon 9600se is adequate for gaming specailly with a 2600+ pushing it.. maybe not with the newest games but HL2 and Doom3 fPS are good enough high 50-60..that is before coming to a complete halt..

I didn't ask about voltage, I asked about amperage. And you didn't answer if you tested your RAM with memtest86 or not. And sorry, but I doubt your 50-60 FPS claims with the 64-bit SE card...especially when Tom's Hardware was only getting about 43 FPS on DOOM3 with a 9600XT (128-bit) on the lowest settings:

Well, since you're such a guru, why haven't you been able to figure it out? The clock's ticking, 18 months & counting...

You never answered the question about amperage, but you should have a minimum of 16A on the +12v rail, with 18A or more being recommended.

You don't see a problem with the voltage rails? The ATX PSU spec calls for 5% +/- tolerance

+12v range = 11.4v - 12.6v
+5v range = 4.75v - 5.25v
+3.3v range = 3.135v - 3.465v

Have u try 1.70v for ur vcore or maybe try 165Mhz FSB? Try to disable AGP Fast Write in the BIOS... ATI generally do not support that...

TMP-Man

Asus A7V classic rev 1.05
Athlon XP 2100+ @ 130x17 = 2209Mhz 1.80v
768MB PC133 RAM @ 130Mhz 2-2-2
10GB 720RPM + 120GB 7200RPM HD
128MB Geforce FX5200 128bit 276/515

This problem has done my head in. However I have found a solution. I've tried all the ram, power, graphics card, bios, cooling etc.

What works is to slightly underclock your CPU. My CPU is an XP2700+ and I have the same motherboard as you. Reduce the CPU multiplier by 0.5. This has resulted in my CPU being underclocked from 2.17 to 2.08 Ghz. I dont notice any difference in performance however my system is now stable which is great.

Good luck.

Forget my last post. Have found the solution. Go to BIOS. Change RAM speed from Auto to 333. Fixed. At least on my rig. Auto setting on this board does not seem to work very well.
