I just finished building a new computer for my second home in China. My wife will be coming here from America in a few days and I want her to bring some games for my new system. It is difficult to download Demo's here so I've been reading game forums trying to make a decision. I'm looking for opinions on which games are good, has good single player mode, and "graphically challenging". I am more into FPS and plan to have her bring BF2, COD2, and Fear. Out of these, I've only played BF2 when I am home.

Hello heroedge,

F.E.A.R is awsome you'll love it but won't be able to play at full settings still, its very heavy on your GPU.

COD2 is also very heavy on GPU but another awsome game

Farcry; if you've not played this then GET IT, it set the standard for FPS a couple of years ago and is still right up there!!

HL2, this is also awsome (Half Life 2), uses the Source engine by Valve and is great fun, lots to do and see in this game, and also comes pre-packaged with the best online game EVER made IMHO, Counter Strike: Source

BF2 as you already know is a great addition..... FEAR and BF2 will be better because you have 2gigs of memory... : )

Hope this is of some help

Happy gaming!

Alex

He's got 2x 6800GT's in SLI, and he's not gonna be able to crank FEAR? Guess it depends on your definition of playing it at "full settings".

*Quake 4 is a waste of time, for a game that requires that much system resources it wasnt that impressive (more like doom 3 part 2)

*Doom 3 was a bit of a let down, good atmosphere and fairly good story, but let down by repetitive gameplay and no real advances in gaming

*BF2 was over rated and a COMPLETE waste of time if you want single player, not one thing about this game impressed me, the gameplay was almost identical to the other BF games and the graphics were no where near what i would expect from a game that requires those kind of resources

*HL2 was at least interesting, good story, runs on almost any medium built machine and fun varied gameplay ( + the gravity gun is the greatest gaming invention ever, even if it was under used in HL2)

*COD2 is great especially for single player but a bit to short and pretty linear, can be a bit repetitive in some parts but hey, thats what war is =D

*FEAR is about the only one i havent' played.

*Try World of Warcraft, even if you dont like games like that, it will change your whole perspective of online gaming.

Thanks for the suggestions/opinions guys! I've often wondered about Farcry. I might include it and HL2 in my selection.

BTW......the computer listed in my signature is not the new one I just built. That ones at home in America. It has no problem playing the highest settings on ANY game currently out there. My new one is a much cheaper version because good hardware is hard to come by in China. As a matter of fact my wife may be bringing me another processor with the games. :)

Cheers

OH...Correction. There are some games that are not compatible or are a struggle with WinXP X64. I have to be aware of this when searching for games.

I didn't like farcry.

I HIGHLY recommend F.E.A.R. and YOU WILL INDEED be able to run it at full with two 6800gt's in sli.

I agree in that quake 4 and doom 3 are not worth it, however doom 3 is better than quake 4 and may be worth it depending on your taste.

Call of Duty 2 is MUST have if you will also play multiplayer. The single player is very very good but it's a little short and may not be worth your money if you are only playing it single player.

The elder scrolls 4: Oblvivion will be released in a few weeks and it's a single player RPG that can be played in First person or third. Amazing graphics and it looks damn fun.

Half life 2 is great too and you may love it.

If we are branching into multiplayer you absolutely cannot beat Unreal Tournament 2004 for fast paced action. I never got into counterstrike and all that gear, way to much effort for an FPS game, although the halflife mod Day of Defeat was absolutely awesome and i hear the source version is waaaay better.

Half life 2 deathmatch is also great fun. But basically for single player FPS games have sucked recently being either unimaginative or to short or just plain crap.

I will agree with everyone else though, if you dont have farcry get it now, awesome graphics even by todays newest standards and the gameplay was far superior to anything we have seen since (HL2 is close, and i haven't played fear yet but hear it is also awesome).

You could also try the medal of honour series, they were above par but suffered the same as CoD for being to short.
