I have a friend that has a gaming server set up and they are complaining about serious lag. I know that we put 2 gigs of pc3200 in it. Brand new Alienware Aurora. My question is, if the modem is connected directly to the computer instead of the switch, will that cause lag?

Would the fix be to plug the modem into the switch instead of the computer? They have 10 or so people trying to play the game at a time. Also, would being on cable be a problem?

If you need more info, please be specific as I will have to relay to another person....

Thanks!

Samantha

thanks for the link, works good here. Maybe I need to have them all test their connections.

As for renting a server, kinda defeats the purpose of having a top of the line machine already in their house.

Think DSL would be a better bet for this, or should the modem be plugged into the switch instead of the computer? (2 nic's installed) Or does the modem need to be that way because its the server? That doesn't seem safe on a hacker level though.....

im on cable now. i did have dsl i liked it very much ,but i moved and they told me i was to far from the server now. specs show u have to be within 3.4 miles from server u connect to. cables probably the cheaper bet . but u should look at getting an increase in bandwidth if u want to run a server. right now im paying $60 a month for cable but i have a business account (so i could get more bandwidth). prices vary from isp to isp and by your total bandwidth. i have my cable modem connected through usb2 because of faster speed than the 10/100 ethernet. also do u have the newest drivers? i had to configure a friends (he was getting bad downloads)and he is on dial up. i installed the newest drivers i could find and it made a 10 kps difference not much when looking at things from a broadband standpoint but hes on dialup.

good luck

It would be more helpful if you describe how you have everything connected more clearer than what you started with

Your connection should be as follows
DSL/Cable modem>Switch>PCs (LAN)
>switch>server

It sounds like you're running

modem>ServerNIC1
>ServerNIC2>switch>LAN

..hacker level? I don't really get what your asking..what's model of switch and what capabilities does it have?

Your current setup indicates you have some remote (internet) ppl connection as well as some local through the server on the other NIC..This way your server is BOTH routing AND serving assuming ICS, which you don't mention.

well what about the rest?? how does the switch and your other NIC fit it? Are you using ICS for other computer's internet access. Are these other computers connecting the the game server also for playing?

Granted USB is faster, but your DSL/Cable won't give you anything close to the Ethernet 100 is capable of.....
