I recently scrapped my old puter and upgraded pretty much everything, except my hard drive. New memory, new motherboard, new processor, 800W power supply, 256Mb Nvidia 5500 OC, and a sound blaster live 5.1. Problem, freezes during all games, emits high pitched noise, and will not allow anything but complete power down. some games barely start, while others will let me play a while. Eventually, they all freeze. Thought possible heat issue, but no. tried removal of sound card, and use of onboard, but still no improvement. I am freaking out badly! I just need my fix, and I cant get it! I should have enough memory, at 512, shouldn't I? HELP HELP HELP SOS SOS SOS

Perhaps its your hard drive too. If it came from a older computer it might be like ATA 66 or osmething. My current rig has 512 Mbs of ram and a 2.6 Ghz P4 along with a radeon 9600..It plays things decently enough for todays gaming. So I think either your graphics card or a slight off chance of your hard drive being problems.. Also make sure that your drivers are upt o date and such. They makeupdated ones for a reason you know. Hmm.. And in my view the FX series of graphics cards all did suck compared to the ATI cards that were around at the same time.. Oh yes.. and what games.. are you trying to play? because BF2 and doom 3 an dsuch might not enjoy your graphics card if you set the graphics settings for ultra high and such.

"800W power supply"

That sounds a bit off. What brand?

ok ok ok, so its 380 W! sorry I knew there was an 8 in there.... ok games im trying to play are not that new. BF '42 and Vietnam, and the Vampire bloodlines game- now it plays that one for a while, but it inevitabley locks- BF games start, but lock on opening credits. Hard drive is old, very old 20 gig, i know you are laughing now. I can also play wings over vietnam, but only a bit longer than vamp. got the the 7750 drivers, the latest is 7775- shouldnt those be good enough for older games? Also, what about the BIOS settings, Ive messed with them, but that doesnt seem to help, so I just go back to default settings. thanks for your help

What brand is that power supply?

I'm thinking it's that.

Did the computer with all the current hardware ever function properly?

the power supply is a raidmax- i had a 1.5 P4, basically a gateway setup about 5yrs old. i upgraded the graphics card several times, up to the one i got now. it wasnt working for crap so i got that power supply, and it still wasnt working. so i just bought everything else and threw it together. It hasnt worked sindce day one.- i take that back. i t was running great for about the first 15 minutes of game play, then it started slowing down and getting choppier. Now it pukes constantly. that help?

ok- this this is getting worse, i think! I am at a point where the graphics on the game must be slightly strenuous, cuase the second I try this screen it freezes everytime- Is this a weak graphics card issue? Please, this is driving me crazy! I plan on buying a better hard drive this weekend, but will I be just throwing more money into a "money pit"? Whats a good graphics card, I thought I was getting a good one- any info on that would help too- thanks again everyone

Test the power supply. Sounds like that's it.

ok WTF and WTH. I took out my 256Nvidia, and put in my old 128 ATI 9200 and VOILA! no more problems- #$@^@&@^@%!!!!! Now why the heck does that Nvidia card act like crap? I was told that 380W would be good enough for all the stuff I ordered. SO please, WTF? If that card dont like my power supply, do I upgrade that (yet Again) or go for a different G-card?
