First Game Problem

Hey all Ill have the fun of posting the first real gaming problem thread. Anyway here it goes. The game is Star Wars Episode 1 Racer. The problem is a black screen when i join it, but sound is still on and the game still works for i can click on the options, just dont c what im clicking. Now this problem occurs only on Windows XP. This game suppose to support the radeon family. I have radeon 8500le. This problem is present with many video cards, nvidia and ati alike. I believe its a directx problem. This game was meant for directx 6.1 while i have 9.0b present. As everyone knows you can not uninstall 9.0b. So the problem is simple, in your opinion whats the problem, and have you seen a patch or have any ideas on how to fix it. I have found no working patches. Thanks in advance.
PS Remember, the game does not freeze, it still works just the screen is black and i recieve no error messages.
