Subject: Fast system, Lots of LagOS: Windows XP ProCPU/Ram: 1 GB |
Comment: I am running a Dell XPS Notebook, 1 GB RAM, Pentium 4, 3.4 GHz, with an ATI Mobility Radeon 9800 (256MB) that seems to be updated (Ver. 6.14.10.6467) and after a few minutes of playing a graphically intense game like HL2, Doom 3, BF2, SWB my system starts to slowly go from super smooth graphics to a faint lag that gets worse as time progresses and eventually makes the game unplayable on any resolution. I have scanned for spyware using Spyware Doctor and have turned off my antivirus when playing a game but these do not seem to improve performance. I can also recall that when I first got this notebook it ran everything fine and this problem is one that been bothering me for the the last 6 months or so. I thought it might be overheating so I not have my notebook on a cooling pad but that does not seem to help either. Are their any system tweaks I am missing or is the only answer to go to 2 GB RAM? Reply: (edit)Hey Breaker, I also think the problem you are having has to do with the overheating, tried to take the temp reading just as you start gaming and compare it to what you get as you get intense with the gaming and you run into the situation you described, then lets know what you come up with. iamdela, Do not hijack someone else's thread create yours. You said it started after SP2, if you very sure of that, remove SP2 and see if that confirms your suspicion.
My sig is on sabbatical.

Reply: (edit)Pentium 4 desktop CPU + radeon 9800 (x800 agp core) on a laptop = massive of heat... Just like Sabertooth said, your laptop could be overheating... I would suggest you put your laptop on a soild surface or maybe buy a special laptop cooler for it... Usually laptop is not good choice for gaming unless u go to lan party... Reply: (edit)Yeah, I agree with the overheating and I agree with the cooler. You can find one here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?Manufactory=&PropertyCodeValue=0&description=cooler&MinPrice=&MaxPrice=&SubCategory=319&Submit=Property The cooler will require a hard flat surface. You laptop should be fine for gaming if you buy this. home page was hijacked byhttp://magicsearch.try this, if you have any backupregistry data files, merge them in to current , or if you have several , i did. i merged about 5 or six. rebboot. it has been

Reply: (edit)I have my laptop on Antec notebook cooler that has two 80mm fans that move 13 CFM. When I first got it helped but I suspect that a heaver fan might be in order. Also, fyi, I find that when I clean my internal fans (there are two on an XPS notebook) that seems to improve performance. Thanks for the help! Reply: (edit)Just for reference in case anyone else has a problem like this. I used the HDD Temperature freeware to measure the heat off my laptop. At startup it read 28 C, and while playing BF2 it was 42 C, defragmenting harddrive 47 C, and with the cooling pad on at 13 CFM it runs between 37-39 C. Above 35 C any sort of gameplay seems to get slow and sluggish and above 41 C it becomes unplayable (5 FPS). Reply: (edit)What is the room temperature u playing games at... If temps is >70F, its not really a good idea to play games with laptop.. They overheat easily... If you have A/C at home, try to adjust the room temperature to 70F to see if it helps... If that still doesn't work, then buy an air plane ticket, fly to alaska and play ur games there... lol TMP-ManAsus A7V classic rev 1.05 Athlon XP 2100+ @ 102x20 = 2040Mhz 1.75v 768MB PC133 RAM @ 134Mhz 2-2-2 40GB 5400RPM + 120GB 7200RPM HD 128MB Geforce FX5200 128bit 276/515

Reply: (edit)I notice when I am in a cold basement that my computer works amazingly well. I'll consider the Alaska fix to my problem but I think an easier solution would be to permantly bolt an A/C unit or car radiator to the back of my laptop.
