Today's onboard audio is sufficient for all but the most "extreme" needs.
It will relieve the cpu of some work, but not enough to be noticeable.

I have a extremegamer. Like jackbomb said framerate wise you won't really see a difference. But if you have a 5.1(or 7.1) sound setup or use headphones to game, you will notice a big difference sound wise.
