I posted a couple of days ago in the hardware forum but the replies I got weren't of much help, so I decided to if this forum might be better. My specs are below.
I wasn't having any problems with my system, but decided to update the drivers for my Ti4200/8X. I went to the nVidia website & downloaded the latest (66.93). I installed them as recommended (uninstalled the old drivers 1st & disabled my anti-v). The install seemed to go OK but on the reboot, I got a black screen...zip, nadda, nothing! So I rebooted to safe mode, uninstalled the new drivers, & went back to v 61.67
Now I'm getting little black "speckles" around my mouse pointer...sometimes there are none, other times just one, sometimes several. I tried several things to fix this:
- ran full virus scan
- ran spybot & adaware
- ran regcleaner
- defraggedAll the above were done from safe mode with system restore disabled. The speckles are still there. I even tried older drivers (v 56.72) but the speckles remain.
I tried playing a couple of games & the display was covered with lines & artifacts. I tried un-overclocking my system...that didn't help (AGP is locked at 66mhz). I tried disabling 8X...no difference. I removed the card & cleaned some dust from the HSF & cleaned the contacts...no good.
I booted to ME & everything appeared fine at 1st...no speckles & no apparent problems. I didn't make any changes to the ME drivers. I tried playing my kid's Harry Potter game (only game installed on ME partition)...it was jerky & finally everything locked up & I had to hit reset.
Am I missing something or is this card simply crapping out on me? Possibly overheating? Could the updated drivers have caused this prob or is it just a coincidence? I have other nVidia cards I can try (GF2 MX400 & GF4 MX440) & will probably do that later today.
Any one have any other suggestions?

1. Uninstall display drivers from add and remove programs.
2.delete the nvidia program folder. Usually c:\nvidia\?---- carefull to delete the display drivers folder NOT NFORCE
3.run this utility.
http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=603You may want to flash your cards bios do to the fact that nvidia has changed its unified driver arcitechture. Lets just say that they are not so unified now that the 6800 GPU's are using new technology.
If you decide to flash you should actually do this first thing, because after flashing the bios the video drivers currently installed on your pc are set to recognise the last card installed. So by flashing, you in theory have changed cards and video drivers will not load even though they are installed. So now you need to uninstall then reinstall video drivers to get the card running again.
download nvidia bios here.

Custom Built,
Thanks for the advice. Doesn't look like I'm gonna have time to get into this tonite, but I looked over those sites & downloaded the necessary files.
Are you suggesting that my video BIOS got corrupted?

"Are you suggesting that my video BIOS got corrupted?"
No im not suggesting that, but none the less possible. What i am saying is that nvidias 6x.xx drivers have changed quite a bit since earlier versions and your card was introduced to the market prior to these drivers being released. With that said it may not be a bad idea to flash. If you decide to flash, the flashing utility allows you to backup your current bios so theres really not much risk in flashing to a new bios.Have the lambs stopped crying Clarice?

The thing that bothers me is that I'm also having problems in ME. I primarily use XP...I keep ME as a backup. I only boot into ME about once a week to keep the anti-v up to date & to check for Windows updates. I did nothing with the ME drivers & as far as I know, there were no display problems in ME until I encountered the recent problem in XP. That leads me to believe it's a problem with the card itself, not the drivers. I'll give the BIOS update a shot though. I'll let ya know how it goes. Thanks again

I heard of the same problem somewhere on this site(can't remember which forum tho).
I also think it was related to the 66.93 drivers?
Maybe the drivers 'are' corrupting the card?

indigian,
yea, I've done some searching & it seems a lot of people are having problems with the new drivers
Custom Built,
I tried what you suggested, but the screen turned into a multi-colored checker board...lol.
Here's what I did:
I copied VGABIOS.exe, NVFLASH.exe, & NEWBIOS.rom onto a blank floppy.
I booted off the WinME boot floppy. When it stopped at the A: prompt, I replaced the boot floppy with the other floppy & typed:
VGABIOS -FNEWBIOS.ROM & hit enter...that's when the screen scrambled, so I removed the floppy & rebooted. I believe the newbios file is the correct one. I have a Ti4200 8X card so it should be the NV28 file.
I could tell there were words on the screen, but I couldn't make out what they were, so I didn't dare continue & run NVFLASH

What meg and brand card is it. 128,ASUS?
You may be able to obtain a new bios from the manufacturer.Does it have a TV out function?
Have you tried these steps yet?
1. Uninstall display drivers from add and remove programs.
2.delete the nvidia program folder. Usually c:\nvidia\?---- carefull to delete the display drivers folder NOT NFORCE
3.reboot
4.run this utility.

I have just installed 66.93.
No problems so far.
BUT
I have noticed something.....
If you right click on desktop
properties
appearance
effects
choose method of screen fontsI have noticed a difference between 'standard' and 'clear type'......
Clear type is a bit specklier.?

Apparently I need Microsoft .NET Framework for that program to run? I'm downloading it now....

OK...I installed Microsoft .NET & did everything in order. No good. I'm gonna swap cards....

OK...I swapped cards. I dropped in my old GF4 MX440 & installed the 61.76 drivers. Obviously doesn't have the same performance, but there's no speckles & no problems with display in games.
I took the Ti4200 & dropped it in my older machine (Asus board w/KT133A, 1.33 AThlon T-bird, 768mb PC133) & it seemed to work OK at 1st, but there were some slight glitches in gameplay. I tried PainKiller for about 15-20 minutes & there was some minor speckling in the display as the gameplay progressed. I'm wondering if it's overheating? This rig has an intake fan in the side panel so it may help to cool the video card...the other rig has no side panel fan.
Here's the card:

Asus has an overclocking utility called Smart Doctor...I haven't used it much & it's currently not installed. I'm guessing I could use it to underclock as well? Maybe that would bring the temp down, if it it actually overheating?
Also, I found what may be a problem with WinXP in my main machine, so maybe that's the underlying cause? If I hit Ctrl-Alt-Del & bring up Windows Task Manager, there is no title bar, the minimize/maximize/close buttons aren't there, & neither is the toolbar with File/Options/View/Help. To close it, I have to right click on the icon near the clock.
Looks like I have more work ahead of me.....

Nope, that's not it...apparently I accidently double clicked on space next to the tabs & that caused the title bar to disappear

There is a temp monitor in the nvidia gui.
I have no problems with the new drivers.
Granted I installed them in a fresh computer but I have many computers on the same HD and there is no problems in any of them.

1. grab a life.
2. DO NOT overclock your video card.
3. get a new system with better video card.
4. DO NOT post here again.
