I have been upgrading my PC lately (yes, to run Doom 3!)At first I had a geforce 3 ti 200 (128mb)and got about 33fps in timedemo. Then I put in a Radeon 9550 (256mb)and got 19fps. Finally I reformatted my machine and put in a Radeon 9600 PRO(256mb)with latest drivers (4.9 Beta)-got only 24FPS at 800x600 on High detail in timedemo. I have tweaked a few settings in the doom 3 config and I get a constant 20-40 FPS in game with certain features disabled but surely this system is now well above basic spec! I have a MSI K7Turbo2 mobo which is only 4X AGP but that shouldn't be a real problem. Maybe I am expecting tto much but it just seems that I have some bottleneck that will not allow this card to run at its full potential. 3D Mark 2003 gave me 2500ish which was only 400 points above the 9550 (but 1400 above the geforce). Any advice is appreciated.

Well I'm not suprised really. 2500 isn't a great 3dMark03 score (I get 6350 with my 9800Pro o/c'd). You may benefit from increasing the Graphics Aperture Size in the BIOS to 256mb.

Well yeah, the 9600 PRO sux0rz

Aperture is already set to 256. I realise this is not a top card but I expected something a little more constructive on this forum than "9600 PRO sux0rz"!
The real enigma IS how come a two year old geforce 3 Ti200 runs this game better than a 9600 PRO which is still considered a decent card and way up on the minimum recommended hardware for Doom 3 of a Radeon 8500!
Just out of curiosity Stu, why are you not suprised?

Radeon's have performance issues in doom 3. Make sure you have the latest drivers from ATI.
This may help:

When you reformatted, did you install motherboard drivers? W/t those you are going to have some performance issues, of course. =)

Splinter: I said I'm not suprised. I suggest you turn off the AA in DOOM3 Advanced Settings, this for some reasons highers your fps (well it did for mine).
I can't handle DOOM3 on high, the frame rate is good but it skips in new areas (loading textures I guess, probably need more RAM). Try 800x600 @ Medium. That should run nicely.Radeon 9800 Pro 128Mb

Thanks for the advice there. I have put in the mobo drivers and I have 1gb of RAM already with no free slot for upgrade (but Doom only needs 384mb). I have it on high but have had to turn of a few effects in config-decent FPS rate now. I even had it locked at 60FPS for a few scenes so cannot complain. I also remember now that openGL is poorly supported by ATI-never mind I can always wait for a patch or new drivers.

Ati = hl2 nvidia = d3
That ti doesent even have a pixel shader does it? I wouldent expect to get good frames on d3 with a 9600. I ran it at about 30fps on medium 8x6 with a ti4200 oced but it just looked liek crap, now with a 6800 gt its smooth and the shadows and textures look right. You should try overclocking your card to get better performance.
