The official doom 3 requirements were released yesterday.

Todd Hollenshead, id's chief executive, said Doom 3 will require:

• A 1.5-gigahertz Intel Pentium 4 chip or AMD Athlon 1500.
• 384 megabytes of memory.
• Two gigabytes of hard drive space.
• An nVidia GeForce 3 graphics card or better; or an ATI Technologies 8500 or better."

All very well, but are those are the minimum requirements?

we all know that means "the game will run, but it'll be so jerky and slow that you won't be able to play it properly"

Any ideas what the official reccomended system requirements are?

Todd Hollenshead also says this on the site:

"If you're upgrading, look for at least 128 MB of video memory in a card with Direct X 9.0 capability that installs into an AGP slot. Cards in the $150 to $200 range — such as a GeForce 5900XT or a Radeon 9600XT — will be a sweet spot."

"• Memory. The 384 MB minimum may trip up a lot of systems. Many mainstream PCs in the last few years have come with 128 or 256 MB of memory. If you want to play Doom 3, more memory is better. I'd recommend 512 MB, and adding up to a gigabyte would be smart."

"• Processor. Although this is harder to upgrade, it's key to your Doom 3 experience. The minimum may be 1.5 GHz, but you'll probably want at least a 2-GHz Intel Pentium or equivalent AMD Athlon chip. The ideal is 3 GHz or better."

So yes, the specs in the first post are the minimum specs.

I just found some doom 3 benchmarks that were done yesterday.

http://www2.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NjQy

The 9800xt gets 50.8 fps at 1024x768 with everything medium quality and no AA or AF.

So I guess i can expect about the same from my 9800 pro at 800x600.

hmm this is interesting, bad news for you overclockers though.

"A note on overclocking: it is very likely that overclocked configurations that "play everything else perfectly" will start to show problems on D3 due to new usage patterns. Everyone is of course free to do whatever they want with their own hardware, but don't complain to us...

Talking to John briefly about his overclocking comments made some things clear to us that many enthusiasts will need to be aware of. When he speaks of "new usage patterns" he is literally talking about transistors on some of new GPUs that are going to be used for the first time when you play DOOM 3 on your video card. So be aware that pushing your GPU MHz may get you different results in DOOM 3 than with other games."

AMD Barton 2800
Asus A7N8X E-Deluxe
