Hi,

I have a slight problem and wondering if anyone here can help me (I've done lots of research all over the web but found nothing!).

I recently purchased Doom 3, and the problem is that it keeps crashing! The very second the actual game itself starts it will set me back to the desktop, I just have time to see a man infront of me, and what looks like a ship taking off to the left of me. and Phut!

I've got the latest Direct X (9.0c), latest GeForce driver, and the latest SB Audigy Driver. But it still does it! What's up? Any and all help GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks,
Cyber-dog

I think the problem is that your card only supports DX7, or maybe 8.1, but not DX9.

It doesn't really matter what version of DX you have installed in your system, if your graphics hardware doesn't support it, how can it display it?

Cheers.

I've played Doom³ on a GeForce4 MX440 64MB.

Check Doom-specific forums for info on what settings to change in the config file. Or you could try changing the resolution of your display in Windows to 800x600 and then start the game. If you have time to adjust the graphics settings in the Doom menu, then disable the high-quality stuff.

I have this problem occur when playing Doom3 and UT04.
The only difference is that when I start the game it sends me to my desktop but the game continues to run in the background.
I have to kill the process and then restart the game and it will usually run.
I'm still trying to figure what the hell the reason for this is.
I have everything up to date.

I have a Gigabyte VIA Chipset (don't know model number).

I was led to believe from the nVidia site that the latest Graphics Drivers would allowed my card to work with Dx 9.0+.

I've got all advanced options in the game turned off, and the in-game resolution set at 800x600 (colour 24-bit), monitor at 75 hertz.

I am still utterly confused to this, I have seen on another forum that someone with the same Graphics card as mine has got the game working, but my attempt to contact them failed.

Regards,
Cyber-dog

Your video card doesn't support DX9, but the game requires that it be installed anyway.

I have a hunch it's your soundcard...that's why I asked if you have a VIA based board. Just for the heck of it, remove the soundcard & the drivers, then try DOOM 3 & see if it'll load without crashing. There are known compatibility issues with VIA & the soundblaster card. If it works, you may have to shop for a different card

I've taken out the Audigy, and I am using the onboarc AC'97 sound.

It's working! Very low FPS though (10-15 fps), that's with graphics at lowest, and 800x600 resolution.

I think I may have to upgrade graphics card (GeForce 6600 Gamer Pro), but in the mean time is there anyway to get the FPS a bit higher?

Thanks,
Cyber-dog

Turning off the shadows gives instant fps, and it doesn't ruin the game.

Another thing you can do, is open the following file in NotePad:
C:\Program Files\Doom 3\base\DoomConfig.cfg
and find and change the value next to this command:
seta image_cacheMegs
I've forgotten what the default value was (I think it was "32"), but set it to "64" or "128" or "256" ... ("256" works for me).
