Comment:

Hey just got Doom 3 yesterday, and it's giving me lots of trouble. In multiplayer the game freezes in about the first 20-30sec, and in single player it freezes in a few minutes. A friend of mine is having the same trouble on his pentium system, although his multiplayer doesn't freeze as often. I seen on several forums that other people are having this problem, but no one seems to have a fix for it yet. Any ideas? Thanks.

If you're OCing make sure its a stable OC
test with prime95

I had the same problems
I thought i could OC some more in hopes of playing the game in Ultra High Quality - but it crashed about a minute into the game.

Incrreate your Pagefile. Mine is set to about 1GB right now. If you're letting windows manage your page file make sure you have at least 1GB free on the drive that your page file is in.

If your video card is a Radeon9800 Update your drivers - use the latest Omega Drivers - I found that they're better than the Catalyst drivers that ATI provides.

Lastly, decrease the settings you're playing at - I'm playing at High Quality 800x600 2xAA (in your Video settings - make sure your AA and AF settings are set to application preference)

This game is a beast
My system can barely keep up
P4 2.6GHz OCed to 3.2GHz
512MB RAM DDR400 Dual Channel
ATi Radeon 9800Pro 128MB (not OCed - yet)

Money not an issue?
Where do you live and when are you not home?
I'm not gonna rob you, I'm just gonna steal some stuff

here is a link to the BETA ATI Catalyst driver which is supposed to be optomized for doom3.

This driver is in its beta stage and I dont recommend using it unless you know what you are doing... Use this driver at your own risk.

I must say that the ATI 4.9 Beta referred to by Chris in the post above has worked without any issues so far... I was getting random freezes/crashes about every 4-5 minutes of play with the Catalyst 4.7 drivers and now they have seemed to stopped completely...

Although I still experience some lag spikes every now and then I'm alot more satisfied with the lag than the freezes...

GJ Chris and thx for the info...

The Beta driver from ATI doesn't seem to work on the Dell Inspiron 9100 with Radeon Mobility 9700....says "Setup was unable to find components that can be installed on your current hardware or software configuration. Please make sure you have the required hardware or software." Of course Dell tech support out in India doesn't have a clue.

Guess Dell has a special h/w that the ATI beta doesnt cover. Freakin figures!

Same problem.

3 gig Athlon
512 ddr ram
9800 pro

I can get away with if I turn EVERYTHING on low, set graphics card and game settings to lowest possible and usually I can get away with no crashes, though still the odd one now and then, the more I ramp the graphics up, the more frequent the crashes get.

Even though it runs completly smooth so far up the settings. The screen messes messes up and sound locks in a loop.

I hope there will be some sort of support to fix this, I think it's something to do with memory cache.

I got it figurued out! I am running an inspiron 9100 laptop from dell and had problems running doom 3. So i looked around and found a forum. http://notebookforums.com/archive/index.php/t-35183.html
download the catalyst driver which is the very top link from Volo. try installing the driver and you should get some kind of an error saying you don't have the right hardware or something. then go down to the 5th post, Percman24601, and go to that DH mod tool link and follow instruction. when you open the mod program, it says it auto opens into c:/Ati. under that click on the folder wxp-w2k-DOOM-HOTFIX.... and choose your graphic card and mod it. It is very easy to do and my game runs great now. Thanks everyone for posting and helping, it has helped much.

I dled it and it works the same as the stock ATI drivers, except no snow. Works like a champ so far and no crashes. Sorry I'm at work w/o the web address but Im sure you can google it.

***ATTENTION ALL NVIDIA GEFORCE USERS!***

I fixed my lockups and freezes :D

I use geforce 3 and doom 3 was locking up after anything from a few seconds to a few minutes. Game would freeze and sound would loop and stutter and I had no choice but to hit the reboot button. But I went to www.nvidia.com and download the drivers version 61.77 and not only did it completely solve the problem, but game performance has increase by quite a lot to :D

And when I say quite a lot, I mean I am using 950Mhz AMD CPU with 100Mhz SDRAM and an original GeForce 3 card and now it runs quite smoothly unless there is lots of fighting going on =) and thats on low graphics settings but with all the advanced options enabled like the lighting etc..

I hope this helps all you geforce users who have the same problem =)

I'm having the problems with the game freezing all the time with my Geforce 4 Ti 4600 card. i just quicksave every second and come back to it :P - getting an upgrade this week.....although i'm just d/ling the newest drivers to replace my omega drivers....dx9.0c WASN'T the problem (after thinking it was, deleting it, and getting 9.0b)
To all those people who're having difficulty installing the game.....you could try installing it manually.
You know how the game cd's are all made of zip files? why not just extract them into the proper folders? might that work? i did it once for an old corrupt demo cd of revolt. I also heard that if you unzip all the .pk4 files (winRAR) into the base directory, and delete the .pk4 files [i'd back them up] (so the game doesn't use them) the game doesn't have to uncompress everything when it runs it - hence, better performance? i've yet to test it our but it makes sense. hope this works...

I tried the new Catalyst drivers for Doom, but my machine wouldn’t even boot after loading them so I regressed…does anyone know where I can find the Omega Drivers?

Nvidia crashing::: I need a solution ...

Please help.

I have a machine with the hardware spec as follows hardware:-
AMD Athalon XP2100
Gigabyte GA7vaxp motherboard
1.25 Gb DDR400 Ram (2512 modules)
NVIDIA GeForce FX 5700oc 256mb
driver V61.77(I have tried both the international and english versions)
on board sound card

WINXP PRO SP1
The latest drivers and Directx9b
Doom 3.

To re cap:
1. I formated my machine.
2. I have a fresh install of windows XP Pro with SP1.
3. I have downloaded the latest drivers and installed them (even though they are not signed by microsoft) These are for the sound device, graphics.
4 downloaded and installed the latest motherboard drivers.
4. I have installed the latest directX9b.
5. I have defragged my machine.
6. I set the doom3 settings to minimum and switched off all the effects (High Quality Special Effects, Bump Mapping, Specular Lighting and Shadows (I Have tried other settings too))
7. the side is off my case to allow adequate cooling.
8. I tried to run the game from cold this morning (my PC was left switched off overnight).
9. stopped all other programs and processes.

I have a machine now entirely dedicated to Doom 3.

Yet it STILL crashes back to desktop after loading screen.

I have spent a week going through every part of the OS and the drivers and installing, uninstalling, formatting reinstalling etc. I have not even got into the game yet. I haven't managed to play any of it!

Activision have tried to help but not found a solution yet.

Can anyone else help?

I've got a system that is almost identical to yours. Same CPU, GA7VRX Motherboard, FX 5900 ultra graphics card. I've got the exact same problem. I have at least one post on another forum that is nearly identical to this one including the dedicated computer part.

Don't bother upgrading your graphics card or your power supply, it won't help.

Activison has copped out on me twice now. No answers from them. Have you had any luck yet?

Need an upgrade tho:

It runs well on Medium, bit too jumpy on High - hopefully a athlon 64 3400xp, 1 gig RAM and 600W PSU will solve it once and for all!
