Subject: Does more power increase performancOS: WinXpCPU/Ram: P4 1.7Ghz/512Mb |
Comment: Hellow Again, I am asking more questions because you guys are very helpful. I currently have a 300W power supply. My config is 40GB HD, 512MB RAM, cdwriter, dvd rom and Aopen nvidia 6600GT. I was wondering if upgrading to a higher power supply will increase gaming performance. Note that once I have attached my HD power cable to my card I am not getting any error about low power supply and no system errors at all. However, do you think increasing the power supply will result in better gaming performance? Or do you once again think that it wont matter because of my slow 1.7GHz processor? Sarosh.

Reply: (edit)You really need a faster processor - do you know anyone outside of your country who may be able to get one for you? 98% of the population is asleep. The other 2% are staring around in complete amazement, abject terror, or both.

Reply: (edit)"Note that once I have attached my HD power cable to my card I am not getting any error about low power supply and no system errors at all." I haven't seen many 6600GTs that need to be plugged into the PSU, but if your's has a connector for it, it is supposed to be used! But as the others said, a more powerful PSU will not improve performance. ASUS A7N8X-X Athlon XP 1800+ 8.5 x 200MHz 1024MB PC3200 2.5-3-3-7 Asus A9550GE/TD 128MB WinME/WinXP Pro SP2

Reply: (edit)I know that many people don't like using this as a source of computer parts purchases, but have you tried eBay for a processor? Even an online merchant would do. I'm confused as to how you can't find any of the newer parts with the internet. You could pay with a money order or check if you can find someone that will ship to you. home page was hijacked byhttp://magicsearch.try this, if you have any backupregistry data files, merge them in to current , or if you have several , i did. i merged about 5 or six. rebboot. it has been

Reply: (edit)Hey, Are you sure that most 6600GT cards do not need an extra power supply? My GT only works well when I attach the HD power cable into if. If I attach the CD-Rom cable I still get an power error message. I didnt know that there were some GT cards that didnt need the HD power cable attached. I am really glad it is all working out because I was scared that I would have to need to upgrade my Power supply as well. As for my situation with my processor, I have contacted some shops here but none of them say they have any 478 socket processors in stock with them. However, one offered me to try out some types if I took my system to his shop, but he didnt seem confident at all. I have found some processors of socket 478 at www.ebay.in but they are still quite costly. Besides, please tell me if anyone knows are these processors really out of manufacture? Are they the old stock that is been sold? Finally, does a slower processor effect graphics quality or the frame rates? If it effects frame rates a bit I dont mind much, because with my current setting I am getting some great graphics with 1280x1024 resolution and 8xAA and 16xAF. I am just playing older games such as halo gain just to enjoy the graphics. Is my slow processor affecting my graphics quality or my frame rates? Sarosh

Reply: (edit)Yes, your processor can affect the FPS. It depends on the game though because some games are processor intensive and some are GPU intensive. This can all be learned by research or viewing the operating specs of the game. I don't believe the PCI-E version of the GT requires seperate power. Every recent AGP version that I have checked up on does require a connection to the powersupply. The processor may not be manufactured any longer, but that doesn't mean that some stores will still have new stock on hand. Still though, I don't know what you are worried about. You can probably find a used processor on the cheap at a reputable dealer such as newegg or computergeeks. Prior to purchasing one just check out the return/DOA policy and make sure it is sufficient. Af for ebay, I don't think you should limit yourself to ebay.in. There are plenty of US/World dealers that will ship anywhere that is possible. home page was hijacked byhttp://magicsearch.try this, if you have any backupregistry data files, merge them in to current , or if you have several , i did. i merged about 5 or six. rebboot. it has been

Reply: (edit)"Are you sure that most 6600GT cards do not need an extra power supply?" Sorry, I was confusing the PCI-e & AGP versions. If the card has a socket, it's supposed to be plugged in. I don't know why the HDD plug works & the CD-ROM plug gives errors. "Is my slow processor affecting my graphics quality or my frame rates?" I have been telling you that for 2 days now... Reply: (edit)I am able to find processors my type (socket 478) on www.ebay.in but I would much prefer for my local hardware chap to give it to me, because he always get it to me for much cheaper. Anyway, I talked to another hardware chap and he is offering me a Pentium 4 3.0GHz with HT and gigabyte 800FSB MB with an agp and pci-e slot for 12,000Rs (aprox 300$) What do you guys think, is that a good deal? Reply: (edit)At newegg the processor is going for $173.00 US. Not sure about the mobo for a couple of reason: 1. The model number will probably help us assess the value of that deal more efficiently 2. I have yet to hear of a board that supports AGP and PCIE. Would seem to me that it is almost impossible or would be worthless for a mobo manufacturer to do when considering cost to benefit. home page was hijacked byhttp://magicsearch.try this, if you have any backupregistry data files, merge them in to current , or if you have several , i did. i merged about 5 or six. rebboot. it has been

Reply: (edit)I saw it with my own eyes. It was a gigabyte board, with a black pice slot for vedio card and a yellow agp slot for agp cards. Anyway, I have decided to stick to my 1.7GHz proceessor. I am enjoying the image quality more than the game. Sarosh
