Here is one of the selling points for the EVGA 8800GTX on running it with windows XP. (from tiger direct.)
DirectX 10 Technology: DirectX 10 improves the graphics, security, and performance of your operating system. Download and install this update for your Windows Server 2003, OR WINDOWS XP-BASED SYSTEM.
So IF I slap the 8800 into my XP based system it looks like I can utilize directX 10 after I download and install it.
I'm still confused about this whole issue, but this would appear to be good news for us XP user's who do not intend to use VISTA for a while, but drool over directx 10.
XP Home SP2 A8N-SLI Deluxe Nforce4chipset AMD X2 4400 Zalman 9500 HSF 2 gig RAM 80 and 500 GIG HD 550 watt PSU 7800 GT SLI Antec case with 4 fans
as long as you got the video card that supports DX10 then it would be OK! i think you can intall DX 10 in win98 as long as you got the video card that supports DX10.
Who are you going to believe Tiger Direct or Microsoft?
From the Official Windows Vista blog site:
Exclusivity to Windows Vista: DirectX10 is exclusive to Windows Vista and is not slated to be supported by any other platform. This will ensure that the next-gen games will be available on Windows Vista before any other platform.
