Comment: I'm trying to play unreal tournament 2003 and I keep on getting this error when I try to run the game :
Critical error:"you have triggered a bug in directx 8.1 runtime. Please install direct s 8.1b for a fix" I actually had direct X 9 installed as I played Fall of MAx Payne in this pc. I have also got the SP-2 service pack. Any suggestions?

Reply: (edit)u sure u dun have one of those dodgy unnoficial versions of directx? u should try and update it to directx 9.0b or 9.0c, maybe that will fix your problem. ANd one more thing, make sure that the nvidia/ati driver you are using supports the directx version u have installed.

Reply: (edit)I am currently experiencing the same issue also but with America's Army and Battlefield 1942 Desert Combat mod. I may be haviong the issue for other games as well but these are the two games I am using as a control to try and resolve the issue.

Nvidia 61.77 - I have also tried every driver back to sept 03' same problem

Direct X passes dxdiag no problems My issues began after installing SP2 and when I reloaded my ghost image of XP pro before SP2 I no longer have the issue I contacted Microsoft on the free SP 2 support line and that was a complete joke. my 6 yr old daughter was more helpfull
