My sister has just decided that she wants a laptop. She knows nothing about computers but decided to just order a Dell laptop for ther hell of it anyway. The spec is: Pentium4 3.0GHz 512mb PC3200 DDR 60GB HDD ATI mobility Radeon 9700 64MB £1,200 Personally, I think she's mad. She could have had a kick-ass desktop PC for that money and still had change for a very cheap 2nd hand car, especially since she has the room for a desktop PC. I was wondering how such a setup would compare to a desktop machine in games? Is the p4 3.0GHz processor as fast as a desktop p4? How would the Radeon compare with a desktop PC? I am unable to find out what the response time of the TFT screen is.. Does anyone know? Thanks. Don't know much about mobility processors but I think mobility p4 is better(in terms of overclocking) than desktop p4, just like how mobility amdxp is better than desktop amdxp. not sure though correct me if im wrong. k? thx. -FuRY CaCForums.tk

Laptops are bad for gaming. that one you stated above does not have a grfx card that can handle some of the newer games. a laptop is also slower than a destop since its all made compact. i built myselfe a pretty good comp for 900 american.

Generally, the mobile CPU chip holds slightly less performance than its desktop counter-part. So the same goes for graphics cards. So your 3.0Ghz on a laptop might be comparable to say a 2.6ghz on a desktop. From the specs you gave... the laptop should do fine with games, even new ones. The radeon9700 mobility is one of the better cards out there for mobile computing(although i'd safely say the ones from NVIDIA are better like the FX5600), paired with the powerful 3.0Ghz processor, your laptop should do quite fine with newer games. josh

I've got a Dell Laptop coming next week for gaming. P4 3.2Ghz, ATI Mobility 256MB, 2.0GbRam I use to have a Dell 8600 and it was OK for games with the NVidia. Laptops can be just fine for gaming, your main performance loss is usually in the Hard drive (since most ship with a 5400rpm drive). I guarantee I'll be able to run Doom 3 and HL2, no problem at all, it's the main reason i bought it. I'd love to have a great desktop, but I'm always on the go, so my gaming has to be as well. If you want a top end gaming laptop, look at alienware, voodoo, or falcon northwest. The two latter both offer mobile gaming systems with, hold your breath, RAID configs. So yes laptops are getting really good for gaming. Now back to playing SuperNES on my Dell Axim.........
